I think they should re-register. If they really hate their name they would be willing to lose the poustcount, if they prefer the post count then they just keep with the username
Esai-kun, did you read beyond the first post? ^^; It's not only postcount... it's all posts made under that account in general, reputation (yes, some of it is earned), join date, and soforth. You'd also need another e-mail address.

Oh, and another point to add... old accounts aren't deleted. Say, somebody signs up under the username "Torchic", then they later re-register as "Blaziken". What if somebody else wants the username "Torchic"? They wouldn't be able to have it. Doesn't really make much sense, considering the original owner of that username clearly wouldn't want their account any more in that situation.

As a side note, people, this thread isn't asking whether you want your name changed, but rather whether you think the Praetors and (Staff) Admins should be able to change others' names. ^^;

Think of it this way everybody- we have around 8000 members at PC. If one person is allowed a name change, there's a potential 8000 people that will bug admins for a name change. Even though it won't be anything that close, it's still alot of work, and sets the stage for more drama than we need at PC. The Admins do alot of work at PC, and dealing with something as trivial as this is a waste of their time.
SPPf is at least 3 times more active and has less people with admin powers but they allow name changes there. I don't see what's the problem with allowing name changes, providing that they are limited to once every 2-3 months. Seriously people.

*wants name changed to PsiUmbreon like on all other forums*

While we aren't actually SPPf, I do agree. They seem to handle it just fine, so if a more active forum with less admins can cope, what's stopping us?

Exactly what Kyogre-chan over there said. SPPf can handle it just fine, and it is way more active. And there are less admins. And the admins on SPPf are just as busy with IRL issues as you guys over here are, except working for SPPf is more demanding.

Being an administrator on a forum is a job. It takes some work.Admins on other more active forums have to do more work and they still pull for the team, so you guys should have no problem with doing a little more.

I have to agree on that too. Most of the upper staff's work lies in moderation duties, as opposed to administration duties. =\

People shouldn't have to choose between their name and their post count. Post count has some sentimental value, as well as join date and rep total. They're not just numbers. You put your free time into posting, repping, and being dedicated to the forum. People should not be forced to discard the fruit of their effort if they want a new name every once in a while.

yeah, i suppose, so many good points on either side now o_O especially the new email and yeah choosing name and post-count...

Best point brought up as of yet.

I agree with Ty, that is a wicked point and so true... im beginning to change my initial opinion.

the main reason we don't allow name changes, aside from the hassle of accually doing them, is it's too hard to keep track of who's who.. It's bad enough when a member signsup under a new name and we (all of us, not just staff) gotta try to figure out who that is.. as staff it's even harder since we have to watch for spam and crap too.. lot of people will want to change their names to avoid a bad rap on their current name. not too cool there.

We know other places allow it but felt that PC really didn't need to (both because of the above, and to be different).

To be fair Steve, it's not too much of a hassle. All that's required is going to Users in the CP and changing the name. As for seeing whose who, there could be a list in the thread or something. We have 7 active people who can change names, so it shouldn't pile up as much as some people think it would. As for the 'change-name-to-get-new-rep' theory, then there's always IP checking for bad members.

Remember that it also has benefits, as it saves upon precious, precious bandwith. [/Gollum moment] As for the different thing... we don't need to be different for everything...

Different =/= Better.

On SPPf there's a thread for keeping track of names. And actually, it's harder to keep track of who's who if you don't allow admins to change member's names... they'll make new accounts, and identifying them with totally different accounts (different email, etc.)will be even harder. So actually, not allowing members to get their names changed makes the problem worse.

this isn't sppf nor do we want to be them.. we have our own idendity and way of doing things..

maybe one day we'll allow it, just right now, this week/month no.

So your reasoning is that you aren't gonna allow name changes just because it would be copying SPPf?

I think Steve's just trying to get the point across that we're trying to be unique here. Its not that we would think its copying, just that name changes aren't our style.

*my 2 cents* XD

So members having to make new accounts, sacrificing hard-earned post count and join date, not to mention that cluttering up the forums with random double accounts, is your style over here?

What's the big deal with "style" anyways? A good idea is a good idea. And it's not like having one thing like SPPf will make it a clone of SPPf. This place already has its own identity.

Now...after much (or little) thought and consideration, I've decided that Umbreon_07 has a point. XD I always hated the fact that I had to give up my hard earned 2000 post count just to get my name changed. ;o; Not like I'm really complaining...but doesn't it also give PC fasle stats in the members department? =x

Post count= a number. If you don't want to change your name because of a number, that's your problem.

False stats, probably, but I don't care about those really. I never look, XD

I know it's just a number, dammit. XD I'm just saaaaaaaaaaaaaying...actually, I don't quite know what I'm saying anymore. @.@ Anyways, I think it'd be cool if admins changed names for the members, but I'm really not one to decide. <.<
