Here's my interpretation of it.
Ash finishes in the top 8 after beating both Paul and Barry at the Sinnoh region tournament. Dawn loses to Zoey in the Grand Festival Finals earning runner-up. Ash goes back to Kanto with Dawn and Brock after the Sinnoh saga. He hears about the battle frontier in Johto. Knowing Ash, he would drag Dawn and Brock there. Ash battles the Frontier Brains ( one of them includes Barry's father). Dawn enters the Johto Contest circuit. Ash competes with both Barry and Paul in the Battle Frontier. Dawn competes with Zoey, Kenny, and Jessie in the contests. Ash wins the Battle Frontier. Dawn wins the Grand Festival in Johto. Ash, Dawn and Brock part ways. Dawn is off to compete in Hoenn in contests. Ash would compete in some currently unannounced region. Brock catches up with Ash.
