Hello everyone! My name is Alex and I am the (new) moderator over at the Pokémon Clubs section. I've been contemplating doing this for a while and now I decided to dive in.

I will be posting a few songs I've written over the past few years (some as far back as 2005). I was in a band that played mostly new rock (Breaking Benjamin, 3 Doors Down, stuff like that), but we've been disbanded for a few years now. I still write songs though I haven't been able to perform them fully in quite some time.

I come from a Christian background so I do write songs with some influence from that, but I tend not to dive into overtly religious-themed songs too often because I still like to appeal to a wider audience.

This first one I'd like to post is called "What's Next." I'd like to get some interpretation about what you think the song is about because this one was kind of all over the place for me, but it somehow completely makes sense in my head. The other voices think so too. So let me know what you think and then I can kind of explain where I was at when I wrote it.

    What's Next

    Verse 1:
What's next after we part our separate ways?
What's next when neither of us knows what to say?
What's next when we feel like we've been trapped inside ourselves,
And we can't seem to find a way out?
What's next when we seem to lose all we have inside?
What's next when we have nowhere else to hide?
Where do we go when we can't seem to follow a path that takes us places we can't go?
    All I know…

    Chorus:
I have lost myself inside my emptiness
This hole in me has become one large mess
Break me down, take me off the ground
Show me how to live my life the way You want

    Verse 2:
What's next after I have found my way?
What's next when we start to see the light of day?
Who am I to judge you for your wrongs when I can't say that I'm not flawed myself?
    All I know…

    Chorus:
I have lost myself inside my emptiness
This hole in me has become one large mess
Break me down, take me off the ground
Show me how to live my life the way You want

    Verse 3:
I am broken down inside myself again
    I can't feel a thing but loneliness
Take me to a safer place to hide myself
    From myself…all I know…

    Chorus:
I have lost myself inside my emptiness
This hole in me has become one large mess
Break me down, take me off the ground
Show me how to live my life the way You want

What's next when I finally realize?
There is more to life than just getting by

    It's not bad.
I'm having trouble finding the melody, and way it is supposed to be sung. Particularly with so many lines beginning with 'what's next.' You said that you listen to, and play mostly songs from bands along the lines of Breaking Benjamin and I can definitely pick up that inspiration. Though, unfortunately this piece feels a little repetitious as a whole.

The meaning, to me, seems to be on the topic of moving on, and trying to get past some level of judgement. Of having a really rough time, but deciding to just move past it all. Hence the recurring question, 'what's next?', and the final bit at the end.

As I said, it's really not bad!
Keep writing, and I'm sure you'll develop into an impressive lyricist in your own right! :D

I kind of forgot about this until tonight, but I decided that I would post another song. This one, "Victims of Circumstance," is about rising above the preconceived notions that people have about you and moving outside of what people tell you you are or say that you should be.

    Victims of Circumstance

    Verse 1:
Tired of standing in line and having to be pre-defined
It's time to open our minds, time to step over the lines
It's not like our vision is dead, we just let lies get in our head
Watch out for what we've been fed, search for the truth instead

    Chorus:
We're all just victims of circumstance
    Searching for a second chance
We are much more than you can see
Believe in us and you'll see what we can be

    Verse 2:
Running down these roads, carrying this load
Nothing here to show, this is all we know
Searching for a place to hide, holding back the fear inside
Discover what we left behind, before we run out of time

    Chorus:
We're all just victims of circumstance
    Searching for a second chance
We are much more than you can see
Believe in us and you'll see what we can be

    Insert Solo Here

    Chorus:
We're all just victims of circumstance
    Searching for a second chance
We are much more than you can see
Believe in us and you'll see what we can be

I really like the verses for "Victim Of Circumstance", I really like the way it flows. It's really hard to judge lyrics without the music, but I can make a nice melody with the words, and it just feels right. The chorus I think is okay, the only line I really dislike is: "Believe in us and you'll see what we can be", it's a bit cliche, but overal, they're some nice lyrics.

Thanks! I'll be honest, it's a bit tough not to come up with cliche's writing music these days, but that doesn't mean I can't try a little harder to avoid them. Back to the drawing board!
