Do you think I need a little work or should I be okay? I haven't battled Red in years. What levels were your team when you fought him?

I suggest leveling your Pokemon a bit more, to around 73-75. Red's Pokemon are 80-88 in level, so yeah. Also i've never fought him, due to my hate directed to HG/SS. I'll beat these games one day.

    Why do you hate HG/SS?

I just think it's rather boring and annoying. I disliked the part around Olivine where you just rush through the fifth gym. The wild Pokemon's levels around Mahogany Town, where the 7th Gym is around 20, while my Pokemon were level 34-37. Also, is it just me, or Desmume glitches horribly when i play it? Like the screen turns black sometimes and it doesn't come back. Well, guess the game hates me instead. kek

Maybe it's my nostalgia for the original Gold and Silver days but it's my favorite :) Maybe level 70 all around will work? This is gonna take forever. I transferred the squad from Soul Silver over to Platinum to fight the elite four over and over again to get the EXP boost, so I just figured I'd ask before I trade them all back over.

Edit: I've never had any glitches personally except in Heart Gold when I boot up the 3DS sometimes it says there isn't a game inserted. But only Heart Gold never Soul Silver or Platinum.

Here is the team that defeated Red!!!

    Typhlosion Lv 70
    Crobat Lv 70
    Heracross Lv 70
    Umbreon Lv 72
    Ampharos Lv 72
    Golduck Lv 78

I lead with Heracross to use Earthquake but Pikachu was too fast and OHKO's Heracross with Volt Tackle, but Pikachu took a ton of recoil damage.

So I switch to Ampharos and Pikachu uses Volt Tackle again. Loses a bunch of HP and gets Paralyzed by Ampharos' Static. So I use Signal Beam to finish it off.

    Then Venusuar comes out and my Lv. 70 Typhlosion OHKO's Red's Lv. 84 Venusaur with Eruption. Granted Typhlosion had full health and was holding Charcoal but I SMILED SO BIG!!! {XD}

Once Red switched to Snorlax it was over. I switched to Umbreon. Toxic. Protect. Moonlight. Protect. Faint Attack. Red switches to Blastoise. Rinse and repeat. It was the Umbreon show. Killed Snorlax, Blastoise, Lapras and Charizard all by itself :)

Didn't even get to use ol' Golduck but I'm happy either way. I haven't beaten Red in a few years. Feels great.

I'm impressed. HG/SS was my first game, and therefore, I stunk at it. Lv. 70-100 pokemon still couldn't beat him. Eventually I beat him 5 years later though.

Level up more. No, I wouldn't say you're redy for Red.

EDIT: Ninja'd by the Golduck man beating Red.

If I didn't have a tank I would have been crushed. Word to the wise for Red, bring tanks!

I actually believe that my Pokemon team was in the 65's-70's when I first beat Red on my Soul Silver, but I can't quite remember. I was just careful in making sure that I had the right coverage and used the right Pokemon at the right times. He's really fun to beat and useful for leveling weaker Pokemon when you're able to.

Yeah I've not gotten a pokémon to lv. 80 in HeartGold since 2011 and I still manage to beat Red. Mostly due to my love for powerful pokémon. A minor Donphan obsession last time I played may have helped haha
