Today, as you all know we have obtained another preview for Best Wishes. A lot of us are further excited, and are glad how the Sinnoh league is coming to a close.
However, something notable to point out, would be the change in the animation style.
I'll describe in text and in pictures. Firstly, the first moment you notice Ash's official pose picture, you notice something is completely different. First obvious thing is his eye. In the past his iris was a simple filled dark long oval with the simple lighting. Now you notice that his brown eye color, which has been shown in rare close ups, is much more defined, and his eye as a whole increased in size.
Another thing with observation is the drawing style of his eye. The eyes is most of the Pokemon characters are drawn with the pencil border except for the inwards border, which goes directly from white to skin. This time, it's closer to a more classical style. In which only the bottom and the eyelash part of the eye is bordered. Leaving the inwards sides the same and doing the same border absence for a bit of the outer sides. Also notice this is approximately the same style used for Iris.
Even the eyebrows have a slightly notable difference. It's that average angle that changes every season or two, but also it's drawing style, which I think stayed about the same until now.
A few shots in the preview reveals many more details. His nose is more defined in a few shots, you can tell intuitively that some body proportions are different.
Now, these are merely observations. No conclusions can be drawn up yet, but there still exist a few hypotheses.
What I think is the most likely, is that there is a different animation team altogether. No more Satoshi Tajiri or Ken Sugimori or whatev, total difference. In support to that, it's not really that hard to imitate Pokemon's animation style. It's probably one of the most basic styles if anything. Imitating it can be a breeze for professionals if even people from around the internet have done.
Another thing, which I actually find a tad more reasonable, yet less likely, is that it will be implied that Ash is going to age. We're going to skip a year or two after the Sinnoh league, and Ash will appear to show some aging. Although a lot of the animation change points to that, the trends show that this is not exactly likely.
I think, that I may prefer the previous style better. This may be a classy case of beginning nostalgia, but I have to lay down that it is a simple change. New comers to the show that see that Ash first then the previous style will wonder "Who the **** is that?". It's a matter of first seen, first liked.
I would for sure like to hear what others think. This may not seem major at first. But, one thing is for sure, it is drastically unreasonable to change the style for no reason. Clearly one thing has to be going on, but at this point it seems difficult to determine anything.
tl;dr : Why do you think Ash looks different this upcoming saga?
