ash seems to always get the same type of pokemon mostly? grass,fire,water,thunder(pikachu) and flying type..
Ash never gets any ghost or physic type. Or any dark type

If I remember correctly, didn't Ash have a Haunter for one episode? Then there's his Muk. This is just a nitpick, but it's Electric-type, not Thunder. ;)

Anyhow, Ash has Poison types(Plus ghost) in the first series.

Anyway, he had Haunter, Muk, Primeape, Gligar, Raticate, Butterfree, Beedrill, Glalie, Donphan, and maybe others. They don't fit his "usual" team.

Easy ans Simple Its because, he balanced his team .

he gets Normal (Snorlax, Tauros) Bug, Poison, Ice, Fighting and heaps others so no i didn't notice
