Are Ash & his friends bad luck?

I've noticed in several episodes of several seasons, whenever Ash & co. meet a new friend along their journey, their pokemon get taken away by Team Rocket.

Jesse, James and Meowth are always following Ash and his friends around. It almost seems like being friends with Ash is nothing but bad luck because now you're another target for the Rocket trio. Sometimes I wish the character of a certain episode would realize that if it weren't for Ash having Team Rocket on his tail all the time, that his/her Pokemon would have been safe at all times. xD

    Your thoughts?

I don't think its bad luck, but I do see what you mean. I never noticed it much in Black & White because Team Rocket weren't around much, but in XY it seems like its every other episode. It seems to be a bit of a predictable aspect of the Anime.

Well, Ash and his friends are notorious for consistently not expecting Team Rocket, so it's not like he and his friends are able to warn CotDs. Besides, Team Rocket never gets away with any of their schemes. Most importantly, Team Rocket used to provide a lot of filler content by interfering with Ash and CotDs, something that has fortunately become less prevalent.

    Let see now-
Most trainer who travel along does better then Ash while he need 3 or 4 babysitter to look after him .
Like Richie , Paul , Cameron , Trip , Drew , Zoey etc etc.
For example , Ash needed Clemont & Serena support just to win his first while a rookie does it fine without Support .
So Isn't traveling with Friend is a bad luck since Ash haven't learn to be independent.
It make it look like Ash haven't grown at all since he still need bodyguard to look after him.
Also , I wish Ash was a part of a clique rather then a gang ! As you know , People in Clique doesn't spend their whole time one anther and has a private life.
Plus , Ash need more time with pokemon then friend since its an Anime about Pokemon & human's bond .
Also its humiliating that Ash shown as the only trainer travel with friends while all his rival travel along .

Uhhhhh that makes no sense dude we're kinda talking more about how Ash seems to drag misadventures with him wherever he goes, mainly in the form of TR's antics.

But, you know, what if TR were off causing mischief somewhere else? What if they decided to give up on Pikachu and stopped following Ash? Then they'd be wreaking havoc upon people who don't know any better or don't have the strength to defend themselves. We see that often enough when TR has been scheming and Ash just happens upon them. What would the poor people do without Ash? I'd say he actually brings more good luck than bad, considering he and his companions always save the day. Even if the situation wouldn't have happened had he not been there, he always manages to set things right.

Besides, nobody ever gets seriously hurt around Ash. He often fixes or helps fix long-standing problems wherever he goes. And he encounters like every legendary ever. I'd say he's got some pretty good luck.

What's better showing of Ash's epic abilities than saving COTD's Pokemon from Team Rocket?

Showing them off in gym battles, conference battles, or battles against actual Team Rocker higher-ups at the least, where they actually count.

Bad luck? If you want to overthink it, that's a childish understatement. It's morally wrong for Ash to be travelling with Team Rocket tailing him.

Ash knows very well that he is targeted by Team Rocket. He has known this since Kanto. Misty is Ash's only partner who--plausibly--believably began followed Ash despite TR, given the bike and Pikachu's power. Brock, Tracy, May, et al. should have sensed something wrong. Yes, we can sing Kumbaya and adore the friendship of magic all day but when you've known someone for merely a few days and constantly this someone is targeted and jeopardized, you're gonna hesitate at the very least.

To take it to an apparent extreme, would you really continue hanging out with someone you just met who is constantly tracked down by, say an actual gang? By protagonist archetyping, of course, he has the ability to ward of the gang, sometimes effortlessly, but the danger is no less despite the available counterattack measures, which are not necessarily as accessible to yourself. In this particular case, Ash's friend's don't have direct command of Pikachu's powers (though arguably the counterattack measure to ward off TR is Pikachu's alone).

At a more abstract level, Ash is the first cause of episode conflicts. Naturally, one might argue, a lot of story conflicts have the protagonist as the first cause. In Ash's case, however, there is a morally reprehensible context:

    • Ash and his companions are negligent about Team Rocket. It should take no more than a week to understand that wherever you go, they go. The proper steps should be to report to authorities, and if under attack to defeat them, as usual, but do not assume the usual final blast off is the end of the problem; make a citizen's arrest and take their Pokemon, for instance. Instead, they have the shortsightedness to see the Blast Off as the solution of the day without actually dealing with the problem. Is that the kind of moral we want for children? Push your problems off for tomorrow?
    • Ash and his companions willingly offer their help and presence to strangers. OK, fine, if it weren't for the previous circumstance. Again, there is an apparent pattern that their presence puts anyone they meet with rare Pokemon at risk and injury (mind you TR liberally applies bombs and mechas). Ash should be grounded at a town until Team Rocket is taken care of.
    • But maybe I'm wrong. Maybe all this trouble is worth it because there is some great goal that brings about more good than the evil brought about by TR and Ash's negligence. Spoiler alert:
      Spoiler:

Is that it, Ash? Is that your cosmic plan? Team Rocket is worth it to become the world's greatest Pokemon master? No alien invasion, cure for AIDS, or occasion to save the world that Team Rocket has anything to do with? No kitten stuck in a tree? Just your absolutely self-centered goal of being a Pokemon Master?

    Give me a break.

I don't really think it's bad luck. I think bad luck would be if Ash meets friends and every time, they get attacked by different people from different 'teams'. It could be possible for Ash to call an undercover agent who would pretend to be one of his companions on his journey, but I doubt that would happen. However, if it were to happen, this 'bad luck' would stop as James and Jessie's arrest would most likely dig up some information about Team Rocket.

Team Rocket have been wasted quite a few years just trying to steal one Pikachu, which is a pointless attempt seeing as we all know what happens in most episodes.

    1. The episode begins with some sort of training exercise and/or cooking.
    2. Ash & co. will most likely meet a person or Pokémon who is then attacked/stolen.
    3. Ash & co. then follow Team Rocket's balloon.
    4. Pikachu uses Thunderbolt, but usually there is some sort of defensive mechanism which guards the balloon from his electricity.
    5. They somehow manage to rescure whoever they are rescuing and Team Rocket 'BLAST OFF AGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIN!'
    6. The weird narrator says, 'what an adventure for our heros. to be continued ...'
    7. Fin.
