Oh wow, this is a lot... and I hope I don't sound like I'm simply fan-ing over this either, I'm just being optimistic (plus a little first-hand experience... just a little though).
I think this new direction is interesting, and it's certainly a step forward, with or without kinks. I've played a little bit of it, and I absolutely love to see something [somewhat] new, yet staying true to itself.
While the Triple Battles seem interesting, and I wished the older games had more Double Battles (off-topic), I'm looking forward to Rotation battles. While Rotation Battles aren't as 'intense' as Triple Battles, I'm sure, it takes a bit preemptive planning and on-the-go planning that varies depending on your opponent. But I'm pretty sure that's more of a personal thought than anything.
While I agree that the sprites aren't the best when zoom comes into play, I still like the direction they're taking with the animations and other things and find them perfectly fine in all other aspects. It just makes me feel like they're more alive--and they already were to me, in their own sense. (Hope I'm not alone in this!) I haven't seen much that would make me turn away. After all, Pokemon did start as 8-bit, so you sort of get use to it... though improvement is always wonderful~
And the music is one of the things I'm enjoying. The sound quality is a step up (though I'm not so sure it really matters for the NDS), and they've taken a new turn in style to go along with this 'fresh start' in the games. At least that's how I look at it. I'm not too in-depth with this kind of information, despite trying to be sometimes. ;p;
Probably the one thing I don't know about, is if I'll be able to play it over and over without losing a lot of interest. That's always been a problem for me, but it doesn't subtract from how much I enjoy the games the first few times.
And from these other posts, I'm feeling that the Triple/Rotation Battles are going to take some first-hand experience for many to find out how they feel about it.
