Welcome to Art Studio! This section of the forums is dedicated to showcasing your artistic talent, learning and growing your skills, and fun activies with the rest of our community. Our Studio is home to all kinds of art with the expection of writing based arts. These areas are covered in our family of forums in the Create and Discover Category. Music and creative Video editing goes into Art Studio too!

General Pokecommunity Rules Apply

Community wide rules apply. That means no porn or graphic images, no advertising, and no linking to illegal/suspicious content. Common sense should guide your actions. If you need a refresher course, please read the global rules.

Advertising includes links to your store or shop, even if it's for your art, is not allowed. We at PokéCommunity can not protect you from fraud or other such instances with commission or sold work, so we do not allow it here. You may link to your social media accounts where you post art, but it must be acompanied by actual art being posted in your showcase.

Rules Overview

More indepth explanations are found below in our [alink id=two]Rules Guide[/alink id].

  • General PokéCommunity rules.
  • Advertising is not allowed.
  • Mild Artistic Nudity or Mature Content is allowed only with use of Content Warning tags.
  • A [Showcase] needs to have 3 images minimum to warrant their own thread.
  • Original artists of a [Showcase] may revive their showcase or shop at any time.
  • You may revive all other threads at your own discretion, but feel free to start a new version of the thread if it is over 2 months old.
  • Generic posts are not allowed, you must comment specifically on the art or topic with more than 5 words.
  • Images larger than 1500 pixels must be enclosed in spoiler tags.
  • If using another artist's work that is not from a widely licensed game/media/series you MUST credit them with the [alink id=three]crediting format[/alink id].

What you can NOT post

Stolen or Uncredited Works

You can not post artwork that you did not create! Even if a friend made it for you, you can not make a showcase for it. You're free to share it in the DCC as long as your friend has a link to their name, but otherwise do not post things you do not have permission from the artist to post! Uncredited works will be warned, and plagiarism will be dealt with very seriously. Editing another artist's work, using it as a base/trace for your drawing, and doing pixel over count as things you must give credits for.

Pornographic Material

You can not post explicit material here, even if you consider it art. Explicit means nudity or other acts of a sexual nature, as well as overly violent gore. Mild artistic nudity is allowed. Things such as anatomical studies, general underlying sketches and things are fine as long as they are not explicit. The PokéCommunity staff reserves the right to delete any or all drawings/pictures that defy this rule.

Requests?

This tag is now retired. You may not create a singular thread for requests anymore. You may request things in an artist's shop if it fits their criteria, and if none of those suit your need, use this thread to request! Please give details about what you need, so that an artist can identify if they would be able to do the request right away!

Let's Plays

While we do consider film making and the editing of such videos to be a skillful art form, gaming let's plays are more considered to be gaming and entertainment focused. Generally, most let's play videos we see and one stop to advertise and go, so they are not allowed here. Please direct your Let's Play thread to the Video Games section!

When using mild artistic nudity or mild violence in your image, use the Content Warning Tags!
To use the header, include the following code:

The result will look as such:

What you CAN post

Showcases

A showcase is what was previously known as a gallery, or multimedia gallery. These have been combined into one! This thread type is where most artists will start. Here, you can post your artworks for everyone to see and comment on, This includes anything but writing, some exmaples being traditional art, graphic design work, pixel art, vector work, original and cover music, animations, and creative editing.

Showcases and You

⦿ A showcase or shop owner may revive their own threads. There is no longer a revival rule for threads, but if it's older than a few months, let the owner decide if they want to continue. You will not be punished for asking about its status, however.
⦿ When posting within a showcase or shop of another artist, you can not post generic or low effort comments. "Cool man!" does not help the artist, and is spammy in nature. Use the like button instead, or try to come up with something specific to say about the artwork. See the critique and commenting guide to learn more!
⦿ When making a request in a shop owner's thread, follow the guide and specifications they have asked for. Do not be demanding to the artist, or other wise harass them about getting your request. A request is a favor to you that the artist does not have to do.
⦿ Be respectful. We are here to showcase your talents and to learn from each other. Comments made in a mean-spirited or disrespectful nature will not be tolerated. You can still critique the flaws in someone's artwork without being extremely negative.

Shop

A shop is NOT a thread in which you can sell goods. This is a place where you can lend you skills to others on a free request basis. It's up to your discretion how you want to take orders, and to deny any request you feel. You can use the shop to post new works that would otherwise go into a showcase and treat it as both of those things, or you may have both a showcase and shop thread if you want.

Showcase and Shop Requirements

⦿ You must post 3 or more images to create a showcase. If you want help with a single drawing, please post it in the DCC or tag your thread as Learning.
⦿ You must post your artworks themselves in your threads. You may not simply link offsite.
⦿ Limit your image sizes. Please put images larger than 1500 x 1500 in to a spoiler tag.
⦿ As an owner of a showcase or shop, you may double post, however only if it has been 24 hours since you last post! If you have more to add after your first post of the day, just edit your last comment instead of bumping it.

Challenge

This tag is for fun stuff!! Contests, activities, or other user made events will go under this tag. Examples of this is the "Create-a-Fakemon!" game that's been played for years, art battles where you go head to head against other artists with a theme, and doing 30 days of drawing. Threads of this nature are designed to be long lasting, and not have an end point unless it is a contest.

Talk

Previously called the Discussions tag, this one is to talk about art! General chat about art goes into the DCC, but if you would like to make an indepth discussion about a topic, use this tag. This is not a tag to talk about your artwork or getting help with it. That is for the Help tag.

Learning

Everything that used to be in The Art School will move under this tag, save for resources. There are multiple purposes for this tag! If you'd like help with a drawing, using this to alert people that you need real help figuring something out. If you're a bit more experienced and would like to lend some help or set up a course for others, use this tag to set up a classroom!

Resource

A resource is a constantly updating thread that is meant to be used by all. Either a collection of information, or a group editing project, people work hard to maintain a database of art or art related information for everyone to use and keep up with.

Mandatory Crediting

Crediting

Why do we need credits?

For both legal and respectful reasons, you need to credit when you use an artist's work, either in editing, using, and referencing it. You should do this to respect the artist's wishes first of all, expose people to their work overall, and also in case of any disputes we have clear evidence to where everyone's art came from with dates and proof. For this reason, crediting is mandatory.

What is considered "using" the art?

If you are presenting a work of art that you claim you had a hand in creating, you must credit the artist if you traced, edited it, or referenced their specific idea. Pixel overs count as tracing the artwork. The specific idea means, if I were to draw an image of a person's fakemon with the exact design as they created, I would need to credit them. If you and one person have a different interpretation of the same idea, it is not necessary to establish who 'thought of it first'. The reason widely licensed game/media/series is not necessary to credit is because those copyrights are already protected well and the artist were paid/gave up their license to the company. We are most interested in protecting individual artist who commonly get their art stolen and directly depend on being credited to expose people to their art.

How to use

Example:

mega_gardevoir_by_princess_phoenix-d87xc23.png

(princess-phoenix, deviantart, 11/27/14, free usage)

Use this code:
Spoiler:

Key Requirements

Original Artist Name: Non-direct link to image, a link to where the sprite was posted that contains the artist who posted it and the date it was posted.
Where it was posted: deviantart, pixiv, tumblr, etc. This is NOT the link, it just shows you where it's from before it's clicked.
Date: The date the art was created and posted to that site.
Usage, if Applicable: A link that shows where it says it's able to use, if it's free to use in the first link just say free usage here.

If you have problems finding these on a page, please contact Nina!

More Crediting Examples:

mega_altaria_by_leparagon-d7uk5tv.png

(leparagon, deviantart, 08/1/16, permission)

Leparagon doesn't state on the actual image page if the sprite is free for use or not, so we go search his main page. On it, he says "Please ask before using my sprites, and let me know what you're using them for. Thanks". So you would ask permission on his main page or the sprite's page and use that link. We're using where someone else asked for reference.

Also, we're going to pretend this next sprite has been edited for the community use, such as backsprites added or the pallet shifted.

mega_steelix_w__gba_sprite_by_leparagon-d82x22i.png

(leparagon, deviantart, 10/15/14, permission)
edited by: Nina, colours, & Archy

In the edit credits, a link to a profile only is appropriate if they don't have an art page, as they might not have a specific place they posted it. Even though in this way the backsprites were created by us, they were still made by using the base, idea, and pallet of someone else's work, and needs to be credited.
