Arisa waited. No unseen force came leaping out of the dark, tearing at her flesh. In fact, when she opened her eyes, the room was somewhat lit by the setting sun outside. That made her feel a bit better.
Jupiter had picked up a scent and was sniffing the air. Arisa could smell it too, but she couldn't quite place it. She supposed it was some kind of metal. As her ruby-red eyes scanned the room, she supposed there was nothing out of the ordinary. Just a dusty old room with a few pieces of furniture, such as a bed and a desk.
The Sun Pokemon began to growl for some reason and Arisa understood why. She had assumed there was nothing out of the ordinary, but upon closer inspection, revealed that the bed had been reduced to tattered bedposts and some ruined sheets. Not only that, but the metal springs that were exposed had ominously sharp points. The desk too, was covered in strange gashes, as were the walls, floor, and ceiling.
Everything in here was useless, completely unrelated to her task. There was nothing of interest here, so there was no point in staying any longer. An odd scratching noise to her right stopped her. It was coming from the desk. Curious, she walked up to it and noticed that it was indeed covered with gashes, but it was untouched in the center of it.
As she peered at this unusual spot, names began to carve themselves onto the hard surface. She did not recognize these at all, so she did not feel anything when they were slowly crossed out, one by one. She did not understand. Why was this happening? What did it mean?
Her blood ran cold as the name "Akane Shimanouchi" was carved onto the wood. Then, as if the spirit knew how much pain it caused her, it slowly crossed off her beloved sister's name. Now she knew. These were probably the Old Chateau's past visitors, the ones who didn't make it back out alive.
The scratching continued. Arisa found that slightly odd, as she assumed it would only list its past victims and cross them out. When the scratching finally ceased, her heart stopped as she saw that a new name had been added to the list.
Her name. And it was directly below her sister's.
She gasped and stumbled backwards, as if an invisible force had shoved her. Jupiter came up to her, frowning worriedly, and she could see her own terrified face reflected on those amethyst eyes. She felt the room's temperature drop by about twenty degrees when she came to a new realization. That metallic smell she had picked up earleir...it was the smell of blood.
"Ooh, you catch on pretty fast, don't you? You know what I want...and it will be mine..."
Arisa scrunched her eyes shut and covered her ears, but she could hear the little girl's voice in her head.
"Heehee...I remember you. Do you remember me, Arisa? Don't break my poor little heart by telling me you've forgotten me. After all...you bleed such a pretty red..." There was a sadistic giggle and Arisa felt sick. She did remember. And she had tried so hard to forget.
"Now...how about we play a game? It'll be just like last time...except your precious Akane isn't here to hold your hand anymore." There was a fresh outbreak of laughter from the girl, and it was all Arisa could do to keep her emotions in check.
"No...leave me alone...haven't you done enough?" Arisa's voice had always sounded feeble and timid, and she sounded even more pathetic than usual. She wished she could be strong, like that other REPO recruit she had seen earlier...
"Oh, you are too funny! I am going to have so much fun playing with you! But you know what? Let's skip the formalities and get right down to business. Why don't we start by reopening old wounds, hm?"
Arisa felt a searing pain on her left shoulder and saw that a deep gash had appeared, the injury already bleeding copiously. Jupiter cried out in alarm at the wound inflicted on its master, but it could do nothing but watch as Arisa was assaulted again and again, her white dress quickly turning crimson as the blood soaked through.
She did not cry out, as she did not want to give that blasted ghost that satisfaction. Instead, she withdrew a silver necklace, with a medium-sized ruby as a charm, and held it up just before another blow was delivered to her back.
There was a slight gasp as she felt the jewel begin to vibrate of its own accord. It was quickly followed by a scream as she saw faint wisps of light being sucked into the gem.
"No! What have you done?! Oh, you have ruined everything! I just wanted to play with you...I hate grown-ups! But mark my words, Arisa...you haven't seen the last of me!"
The necklace clattered to the floor, as Arisa could no longer hold it up. Jupiter picked it up and placed it in her hands, nuzzling her face. It looked crushed, and she could tell that it felt useless because it couldn't protect her. It was all right, though. She recalled it back into its ball and somehow managed to get to her feet. Her vision was beginning to blur as she turned the doorknob to go back into the hall. She knew she looked dreadful, with her clothes soaked through with blood, her hands dripping wet with the sticky warm liquid.
As she stumbled outside into the hall, all she could see were vague, shadowy images. Whether they were other REPO recruits or something more sinister, she couldn't tell. At this point, her strength left her, and she fell to her knees.
"Akane..."
Her sister's face was the last thing she saw before she collapsed.
