So, throughout the first and second generation of the anime, Ash successfully captured all three starter Pokemon in their respective gens. But in Hoenn, Ash only had Treeko. And now in Sinnoh, he has Grotle and Chimchar.

I personally liked the fact that Ash caught all the starters in gen one and two. I'm kind of disappointed that they started to give them to the supporting characters, especially Brock.

So, why do you think they stopped giving Ash all three starters and how do you feel about it?

probably because they decided it was time for a change and start of something new?

EDIT: and personally I cannot picture ash owning a torchic, mudkip, or piplup for some reason...it just doens't seem to match with him...

So the writers could show off more of the other Pokémon from the region on the main character's team. Simple as.

True. But I felt it somewhat as "tradition" for the, would-be, Pokemon Master to obtain all the starters.

It just felt weird, seeing Ash without all of them.

The writers want to show to both Ash and the audience there are other water and fire types. I mean with Gen IV,he may have not gotten Chimmy even if the Pokemon group actually game up with a substantial amount of fire type Pokemon. I mean in reality with was either Magby or Chimchar.

I really like how they've given Brock starter Pokemon, actually, because I think it was unfair how Ash got Charmander. Brock was the one shown to care for it most when they found it, Brock got the most angry at its trainer, and Brock was the one who showed the most concern. Personally, I think he was cheated, so I'm glad supporting characters have been given more of the starters. Ash can't have all the glory, even if he is the main character.

    Ash doesn't like Mudkips *shot*

And well, he IS traveling with trainers. They need starters too no?

And they introduced starting trainers in the anime the last two gens so that is why. Brock getting one was weird and Ash and Paul having the same pokemon as each other is annoying.

Satoshi isn't the only person with a quest that the writers show anymore. With the introduction of Haruka as a co-star, it was best that she have one along with Takeshi. Hikari then came along and, like Haruka, was best to have one. This time they gave Satoshi the other starter because of the lack of a role Takeshi has. His role affected Mudkip's sceen time as you can see.

Dont you get it Ash cant have the same as his partners!

~iN 1ST GEN. Brock and misty didnt have any of the starters, so Ash ended up with them all.

~2ND GEN the same as 1ST

~3RD GEN May had Torchic and Brock had Mudkip, so Ash got Treeko..

~Now 4TH GEN Dawn has Piplup, so Ash get the other two, Chimchar, and Turtwig..

    Do ya get it now?

It did feel kind of awkward at first when Gen III started with Ash just getting Treecko. I did kind of realize the importance of spreading the starters. But it turned out giving a starter to Brock was a no-no. I mean, Mudkip hardly ever did anything. It was nice to have all the Hoenn starters seen in their second forms which was a first in the series.

During Kanto and Johto when Ash got all three starter Pokemon, only ONE of the three evolve and the other two just stay in their basic forms. Charmander went all the way to Charizard and Chikorita only evolved to Bayleef. I was a bit disappointed that Bulbasaur refused to evolve even back then. I kind of missed out on most of Johto because I got tired of the repetitiveness and then I started watching it again during the Advanced Generation. When I look back now, I kind of wished Misty did get Totodile. At least then she would have had something to do.

When Ash got both Turtwig and Chimchar, I was kind of worried that the trend may still continue that only one starter will go all the way and my money was on Chimchar for a long time now. But then Turtwig evolved into Grotle and that hasn't shot down my hopes for Chimchar yet. Considering the rumors that Chimchar will evolve to Monferno sometime before Movie 12, it would be the first time ever that more than one of Ash's regional starters would evolve. I've been waiting for Bulbasaur and Squirtle to evolve for years and I have given up hope on any of that. I'm not so sure about the Johto starters though.

The series gets more and more disappointing as it goes on. Of course, I still have my bin full of all the Kanto and Johto pokemon tapes... It seems that the series started going downhill after that.... I wish that Ash had actually evolved his starters.
