Okay, just to get this explained first: pseudo/minor-rivals such as Barry, Morrison and Harrison don't count, this is about main rivals.
Basically, I was thinking about how Ash is always seen to lose to his main rivals - Gary (I may be wrong, but I don't think he ever won until the Silver Conference, and Gary was always ahead), Paul and Trip all defeated him in their first battles, and Paul and Trip have more victories than losses against Ash (again, I'm no expert on Gary).
However, do you think Ash will ever defeat the character who becomes his rival in their first battle? I.e, another new trainer, like Trip, who gets defeated by Pikachu, who dodges all of his attacks for a couple of minutes then almost kills it with Volt Tackle, rather than the normal pattern of new trainer obliterating Pikachu for no apparent reason?
If this did happen, would you be happy about it? Certainly, I think it would give the trainer more reason to want to battle Ash, and also keep people guessing about the Pokémon League at the end, possibly even thinking that Ash might lose to a main rival in it (which never seems to happen, even in Hoenn, he lost to the most minor of his two pathetic excuses for rivals).
So, yeah...discuss.
