I just saw AG 99. I love the new ending. There are a lot of usefull images to paste together. And the episode is great too. (But Smile is still my favourite ending.) Anyway here is a screencap from the episode.

This episode aired last thursday. Ash and co are in a room with zero gravity.

I mean I watched every epi. up till now and it doesn't seem to have much of a "purpose" like shows we've seen like Shaman King, Full metal Alchemist, and Monster Rancher. Pokemon will most likely stop when:
A. The writers decides to stop or
B. It isn't making any profit anymore

As it is current going IMO neither one seems to happen very soon.

As for the "purpose": according to someone i know anime usually has either around 26 episode (like Slayers Try, Chrno Crusade) or around 52 (Gundam Wing, Gundam Seed, Full Metal Alchemist and Gundam Seed Destiny). Exceptions also exist like: DBZ, Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokemon falls into this category too. When compairing an anime with 26-52 eps with an "exception" anime I've noticed that:
- A 26-52 anime has either multiple short term goals or one final goal with a lot of twists and turns during reaching this goal.
- An "exception" anime has one final goal. From start to end there is some purpose but not very much.

(This one might be VERY off topic) Yu-Gi-Oh! has ended in Japan, but the last season is awsome. It's less about the card game, lot of "Aha, so that's why...", history etc etc. The whole season could be considered a standalone 26-52 anime.
I hope that the final season of Pokemon would be just as great, but not for the next 3 years or so.

Heck this is a long post looks more like an essay ^_^; and when way off-topic concerning the topic of this thread
 
why did yu-gi-oh end?

I don't know the reason, but my guess is that the writers find it necessary to end it instead of making another season about someone who threatens the world. But fear not :D a new anime has started called Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, with new a new cast, enemies etc etc.

I think that is what he mean't when he said it aired last Thursday.
 
Don't worry it hasn't. It's 99 - 48 (for the USA) = 51 episodes = 51 weeks (assumed that 1 episode airs a week = almost a year (!)
With "last thursday" I meant "last thursday in Japan"
