Ok, I was watching WTF Pokemon on youtube, if you haven't heard of it, oh well, then you may learn something here. What it's about is basically finding all the plot holes and bad writing in the whole first season of pokemon (it's hilarious). Anyway, when they were making fun of episode 2, they found a part that most people have missed.

I would give the link to the episode but I would probably get flamed for putting a pokemon mockery video on the Pokemon Community, so I'll just say what they said.

There is a part when Ash reaches Viridian City, and he is talking to his Mom on the phone. Anyway, she clearly states "Wow, it took your father several days to reach there when he started pokemon training, he will be so proud of you" or something like that. It was overlooked by a lot of people however (including me) because quickly they change the subject. So this proves that Ash's father is alive and is a pokemon trainer. Also, it proves that his dad isn't Prof. Oak or Giovanni. For Oak, its because she says "he will be so proud of you", and if it was Oak she would have said his name because he was introduced already. As for Giovanni, how would he possibly know if Ash started pokemon training or whatever. This line assumes that the dad knows what he's doing and stuff, and Giovanni has no clue.
Anyone wanting to watch it go to youtube and search "WTF Pokemon Episode 2".

Ok, that's all, I just remembered awhile ago there was a debate on who his father was + there are debates about it everywhere.

Because the first part of the phrase "Wow, it took your father several days to reach there when he started pokemon training, he will be so proud of you" is in the past tense it could mean that he died.

Um, maybe you should look at the second part of that sentence: "he will be so proud of you." That's future tense, which shows directly that his dad is not dead.

Any evidence on whether this is in the original?

hmmm I'd like to see an Ash's dad episode that would be kinda cool. (expects it to be all dramatic & Maury-ish XD)
