Australia to Censor the Internet

I find it distributing that a democratic country is going to actively censor the Internet.

That is exactly what I thought when I read the thread title- like... I'm sure if Australia censors the internet... yeah.... it will become North Korea... long and short of it :P
Or maybe just China...
I know I'm joking which makes me a terrible person but I am absolutely appalled by this

I'm sure there will be thousands of aussies(including me) to stand up against this terrible filter, I mean seriously, whats the point of getting the internet if you're not able to access some sites that have information you need for something

I read something about this on a blog post by H. Hanai. I don't think that this should be done to a country anywhere in the world. It seems wrong to limit citizens of a country to limited knowledge.

In China, they don't let people search up an incident that occured the a few years ago. I just hope your government reconsiders this.

This is really weird, I hadn't heard much about it before this morning. How exactly are the regulations going to work? I mean..what exactly are they going to block? It's going to be so incredibly difficult to enforce this. I would have thought Australia, the land of awesome, would know better XD.

This is ridiculous, this shouldn't be done. Hopefully there are people that are standing up for themselves and telling these people to start talking with their mouth! Anyhow, I'm against this definitely.

Same thing's going on in China.
Only there it's called Communism D:

China is becoming a super power in the world so they'll hopefully convert. Maybe they won't have a hard as Russia had. But I digress some bit.

Hopefully the Aussies won't become communist.

A democratic country is now censoring everything on internet that it deems wrong? This is rather disturbing. Their government could censor about anything. Since "illegal" can be quite broad. Even to articles on Wikipedia.

more nanny-state politics

Whatever happened to "parental responsibility"? Soon EVERY country in the world will impose mandatory nation-wide filtering that cannot be bypassed, including the United States (I wouldn't be surprised if the U.S. is next, especially considering all the police state enactments in the name of "fighting terrorism" and "preventing another 9-11")!

Spoiler:

As an Australian I demand they don't censor Wikipedia, I look up stuff on it all the time, I'm obsessed with it. <_<

I hope this isn't going to be as bad as I'm picturing it, hopefully (this sounds kind of odd but I hope you understand what I mean) they only ban illegal-illegal sites, not sites like Wikipedia that have a few bad content on it, which means even this site would be banned if they deem ROM hacks and fan games to be 'illegal'.

It can't possibly be as bad as my school's filter, which blocks anything with the SLIGHTEST inappropriate content on it (makes it extremely difficult to find information when doing computer work).

I don't know whether you were being serious or not and I mean not offense to anyone but that comment made me laugh. XD

But in all seriousness, stuff like this makes me want to move to the US, as we're so over the top with everything. >_<

If Obama's our next President then there's no need to worry. ;)

It has been announced that Australia's Cyber-Safety Plan will have no opt-out option as the government originally promised. It has also been revealed that the Communications Minister, Stephen Conroy tried to suppress opposition to the project. I find it distributing that a democratic country is going to actively censor the Internet.
Pfft... I think Australia's far from democratic. Would a democratic country force people to vote and even allow stuff such as teachers who snoop through their children's lunches? Now they want to censor the internet! Gah! All that proves how false our democracy is.

This is annoying, and shouldn't happen.
I don't want my internet censored out, because the Government deems "illegal", it's absurd.

I guess they'll be censoring sites to order fatty foods from to stop kids from getting(more so) fat

They'll probably only filter out porn sites, anyways.
