Australia to Censor the Internet

Regardless of what the governments excuses and reasons are, internet censorship is unforgivable. The internet is met for a free exchange of ideas, transfer of information, it is owned by no once, and showed not be policed the same.

Hell, in the USA if they tried to pull this, it might be illegal under the commerce clause of the constitution...

No that I agree with the filter, but what ground do you have exactly if you do intend to protest?
If they're deemed crimes then it'd be like turning yourself in as a criminal.

freedom my good sir, freedom, they might as well just censor searches for "why does the government suck?" they're taking our freedom of communication away

Well, they're already watching what we go on on the internet (in Britian, at least) they watch out to see if you're using stuff like Limewire and Bittorrent and send you letters if they think you're sharing music. I don't know if this is the same sort of thing or if they're doing it in other countries, too. The ISPs don't want to, of course, but the government is making them, otherwise the ISPs get fines.

Actually it would be legal under the Commerce Clause because the internet crosses state lines. However it would be unconstitutional under the current interpretation of the First Amendment.

This is gonna suck :S Whoever's running for pm next time, against Rudd, will be getting my very first vote...as long as they ditch this evil scheme |<
Another reason added to the "Why I hate Australia" list :S

I just can't believe a free country could, and would do something like that.. it seems like it is turning more and more communist everyday. Quite sad really.

Oh, anyone willing to move to Slovakia? No censorship here :P And one more cool thing: at my school there's no filtering except teacher sitting in the class behind your back :P

Though I am not an Aussie, I think this shouldn't be allowed in any country, democratic or not. It's just bad. Chinese people have limited information about their own history (because some things are considered nonexistent by the government though they actually happened, we all know...), I bet you don't want it to happen in your country.

That's horrible. It isn't like there aren't already enough filters out there on us already, but to put a filter that you can't opt-out of, is a bit too much power, don't you think?

Wow scary. Now that you think of it internet is becoming more and more controlled. Looks like we are going to have to get used to big brother.

Almost glad I moved from Australia when I was four then o_o;;

Eh, they'll be enough of an outcry to keep this from happening.

I, for one, am horrified. Almost every single pastime that I've enjoyed over the years would be gone. But, there is absolutely no way this will happen.

Mass uprising, anyone?
Spoiler:

If the really did that, it would be JUST PLAIN WRONG.

SERIOUSLY? That totally sucks! I mean for me that would be like, the end
of the world. I don't know what people will do if they censor the internet.
Or are they only censoring specific things...?

When I looked at the thread title, I thought China was called Australia now.
Seemed I was way off.

I still doubt this'll be successful though.

I read something about this on a blog post by H. Hanai. I don't think that this should be done to a country anywhere in the world. It seems wrong to limit citizens of a country to limited knowledge.

In China, they don't let people search up an incident that occured the a few years ago. I just hope your government reconsiders this.

If you Google Teinemen Square There's Pictures of Tanks, if you Google on the Chinese Google you don't get any Tanks.

Filtering isn't that bad, it's not for Wikipedia or anything like that, it's to stop people from downloading Child porn Ect., I think some people are overeacting, if it's that bad use a proxy filter.

wikipedia pages can be deemed illegal, hell our government doesn't want an R rating for video games, because apparently no one above 20 plays video games, if they're that stupid, google can be deemed illegal

We do have a crap government, but seriously, what can a nerdy hitler do? He can't really censor opinion's, only illegal downloads, porn ect.
The R ban is not that bad, I know heaps of morons who wanted to drift after watching tokyo drift because it is "cool" =_=, and there's even been cases of people going crazy and thinking they are (insert name) from (insert name).
