Avatar Help/Hints?

I was just trying to figure out how to get an avatar with a transparent background instead of white. I used to have a sprite I made but on a white background and I wanted to know how to make it transparent. Also, how do you get animated avatars? Btw I use MS Paint for Pictures. And I know how to make a normal .gif file, just not how to get it on here...

You can use The GIMP or iaza.com's transparency option. In the latter's case, you need to make sure that the parts you want transparent are unique colours (for example bright green for the background which you want transparent, but it can't be elsewhere otherwise that will become transparent too).

You may have better luck in the Art Forum, as the arty pros are more likely to see this, but you won't be able to deal with any transparency in Paint. GIMP does the job, but it's qite confusing if you haven't used other advanced graphics programs before. You're also better off with PNGs if you can. Better quality and more transparency options.

Go to GIMP and use magic wand tool and select everything but the sprite then say delete,

You need to get them with transparent backgrounds or use this wand thing on GIMP and choose everything other than the sprite and choose to delete it.

Ok! I got GIMP but I don't know how to save it as a file that this forum can read and keep the transparency. Are .PNG's supposed to?

As long as you've deleted the white part, you'll be fine. Just go to Save File As and save it as a PNG, like others have said. However, something I've experienced with some vB forums is the unability to use a direct link to upload transparent avatars. I have no clue if that happens here or not, but if the forum says it's an invalid file, upload from your computer itself. Don't even upload. It's always worked for me.

Well, sorry, I didn't notice. I was just exerimenting with that before I posted it.
