I'm wondering how this even qualifies as a remake anymore. Seems a lot closer to a retelling, if anything, but this definitely isn't Final Fantasy VII built from the ground up. I also love some of the quotes, this one being my favorite:
"Whereas with Final Fantasy VII Remake, we already have a preexisting story, so it wouldn't really make sense if that isn't encompassed in a multi-part series..."
It wouldn't make sense, huh? Cool, cool. Hey, remember that one time you made that game and shipped it out, in full, in a single release? You know, the one about ex-soldier who was hired by a group of terrorists in order to save the planet from an energy source that was literally sucking it dry? What was that called again?
Oh, right.
FINAL FANTASY VII.
Di-like, did something happen? Was Sakaguchi really the guy that planned every part of the games prior to XIII while the others just watched? Because the things these guys say sometimes absolutely boggles my mind.
You know what they could have said? They could have said that in the original release, so little time was devoted to developing places and characters that they wanted to make entire games focusing on those...discs, I suppose. I wouldn't have any problem with them making 1 game that focuses on- well, pretty much anything from disc 1, especially AVALANCHE.
Now I, personally, have no problem with the episodes being full sized games, especially if each disc is an episode and there's more development and content than the original had- it had a lot of room for improvement and expansion, after all. Of course, a single release'd be ideal, but they've already committed to an episodic release, and thanks to the money they're pushing into FFXV, if that doesn't work out this is the only way that they'll be able to recoup, especially after the statement they made about what would happen if XV fails. FFVII has always been an ace-in-the-hole, and I'm hardly surprised that they'd exploit that. That's business.
My problem is the fact that I have no idea what this multi-episode release entails. They've said literally nothing about what it means for the story, storytelling, how many episodes it'll be, the content, what content'll be available across which games, so on and so forth, so in no way can I call this a good thing. That they're so mum about this creates skepticism among fans about the game- their emergency cash grab that should have guaranteed millions sold. And when they make vague statements about its release process and the gameplay. they do themselves far less favors than should even be possible.
That they're treading dangerously corrosive ground with this is kind of amazing.
