Best EV set-up 252/252/6, 252/129/129, or...?

I've been on several forums talking about EV training and the "best" EV combo for 'mons.


Some people say that 252/252/6 (basically fully training 2 stats) is the best set up.

However I'm quite partial to 252/129/129 (which is maxing their highest stat, then running 2 lesser stats to about half)

But then their are also some people who use varied and kind of odd EV setups.

Basically I'm just wondering which set up is statistically best. Or is there not a statistical best, and it's mostly personal preference.

In most situations it's best to fully train 2 stats so you can maximize the potential in what your Pokemon wants to accomplish at. A few examples for a 252/252/6 user would be a Choice scarf user, fast sweeper, Physical/Special wall or even a Trick Room attacker. Mixed sweepers, or slower attackers who only want to outspeed a certain Pokemon, might make the most with a 252/129/129 setup.

4/252/252 is generally the best spread as a general rule of thumb to take advantage of two of the Pokemon's best stats. However, people have opted for spreads outside of that in order to outspeed certain Pokemon, achieve certain KOs or avoid KOs.

Examples:

Mixed Infernape runs Hasty/Naive with 168 Atk/88 SAtk/252 Spe to 2HKO Therian Landorus with Fire Blast (or Mega Venusaur with Flare Blitz after Stealth Rock)

Mandibuzz runs Bold/Impish with 248 HP/136 Def/108 SDef/16 Spe to avoid the 2HKO from Incarnate Landorus' Sheer Force-boosted Focus Blast while outspeeding maximum Speed Mawile and Azumarill.
