That's wierd why would they change the name, they could just leave them alone.
 
They also kiddy the show up, they should up the rating and let older kids watch it, and that's why they are comming out with uncut videos with all original things in it (I think it will have all the original things in it).
 
My favorite is Slifer the Sky Dragon. Ra used to be my favorite before I found out about Slifer.

And mai, don't know her japanese name but it's obvious by her last name why it was meant to be that way. and Seto and Mokuba sound Japanese in themselves.

There is no kyoto religion, it's called shinto. Just because you've seen a anime, dont think you know everything. That legend tells of the four guards of kyoto.

No snake, and yuugi means game, and OH means dark, darkness game, shadow game get it? Yami's real name Ateum means fearless, so that dosent effect anything. Jounouchis name translates to-friend. Anzu translates to-hope. I dont remember honda or orgusaki.
 
NO, I have a gauranteed source for my translations, if you must know. And I said a snake dragon. Like rayquaza, or those chinese dragons you see in parades. And Shintoism may not have any gods rather than gaurdian spirits, but it is still considered a religion. Tristans Japanese name means "rice paddy", and yugi's name does mean. "To play". Anzu's, or tea as she's called in english, means "apricot". This is straight from Shonen jump, the original Japanese manga. So what they say about the Japanese language is almost gauranteed to be the truth. :\
 
Well Seriously, I prefer to dignify the cards with their original names, that's all.

And Yugi does mean "game" or to a lesser extent "to play" from Mandarin/Cantonese. "Oh" was just losely translated to king. Note that Japanese and Chinese are quite similar to begin with. lol :P

I meant that Shintoism has a god and the four gurads, you called kyoto a religon I'm just correcting you. Also I wouldent trust Shonen Jump USA, they are just... I know a good deal about Japan and it's culture considering my past with it, I have studied it for 6 years, I have a good number of Weekly shonen jumps, I know what I'm talking about with the religon. Also, YGO creator has said himself that Jump was changed the meanings of thins from his manga, thats JAPAN jump not USA jump. Jump isent the best company..
 
Jump is the original, and they may have changed his work, but they did not change the japanese lnguage, that just isn't done. you're twisting the meaning of his words all out of proportion.

Frankly, I'm getting the impression you think that jsut because my sources are american, they aren't credible. That's discrmination flat out. >8(

Shinot is Japan's largest religon, other then that JUMP has great deal of to what happens in the manga,...I think were on the same page now,^^.
 
*wanders in late* Slifer isn't the translated name of Osiris, it's the dub name. And there's a difference. Osiris was a God of the Ancient Egyptian culture. =\ I have no idea what Slifer is, and it doesn't seem to have a meaning, but I do doubt it's from anything Japanese. Mostly because it's not a Japanese word at all (it doesn't even *look* like one) and 4kids also wouldn't add in any references to Japan in the midst of taking them all out. x_o;

Anzu means apricot. The name "Tea" is also a dub name - not a translation. Same goes for Jounouchi/Joey and Honda/Tristan. Mai's name went unchanged, save for tacking the "Valentine" on in favour of Kujaku and Mokuba and Seto's names went unchanged, too. Thus, their Japanese soundingness. "Yuugiou" means Game King, or King of Games. "Yami" is the Japanese word for "darkness." And finally, "Atemu" is derived from Aten/Atem, which was another Egyptian God of sorts. Sort of like Ra, but I believe Aten was the sun disk itself.

It's pretty hard to translate things from Japanese and keep it in its original context - Shonen Jump may not do a perfect job, but I think it's okay. It gets the point across well, although I really have seen a lot of inaccuracies. ^_^; (Like when they replied to a fan letter saying that Yami Yuugi was like a ghost of Yuugi himself... when he's actually a completely different person. o_O)
 
The best God is Obelisk. You sacrifiice 5 monsters (3 to get it out, or you could Special Summon it,) destroy al your opponents monsters and inflict 4000 to their LP, then attack their LP directly! 1 turn KO!
 
I vote for Saint Dragon Osiris. I refuse to brutalise Osiris by calling by its ridiculous dubbed name, Slifer. And the name Slifer is derived from one of the US Yu-Gi-Oh executives, if you want proof just go to Yugiohrealms and find out (the hard way, God card discussions are not particularly welcome there).

Osiris' attack powers can be beaten, but overall they're great. Six cards in hand=6000 ATK and DEF. From what I've heard, Osiris has some sort of special ability (this is not concrete though): If the opponent summons a monsters, Osiris reduces it's DEF by 2000; if the DEF reaches 0, then the monster is destroyed. Oh, and Osiris looks cool, being a huge red dragon with two mouths.

The names of the Egyptian God cards are derived from the names of items in Egyptian Mythology:
  • Slifer the Sky Dragon - Original name derived from the name of Osiris, the god of life, death, and fertility. English name is an inside joke, derived from the name of Roger Slifer, a producer of the English-language adaption to the anime.
  • Obelisk the Tormentor - Derived from the term "Obelisk," a type of monument.
  • Winged Dragon of Ra - Derived from the name of Ra, the solar deity. In the Filipino anime, Ra's name is changed to "Apollo," the Greek equivalent of Ra.
Plus why are you all arguing about this crap on a Pokemon site...
