"Welcome to the ranch, stranger! 'Stables is this way."

(You're a newly hired farm-hand who has just arrived at a state of the art, multi-facility Pokemon Ranch. You've come here to earn a wage, save up some cash, and pursue your dream of being a Trainer... and maybe even the League Champion.)

"Lock the gates back after yeh close 'em. Yer gear's over there."

(You've arrived at your assigned building, after a none-too-short trek through the mud. The place didn't look so grimy from far away... You question your desire to get away from the noise and lights, and garbage cans, and Febreze of urban living. But you've heard that ranch hands that do well are sometimes rewarded with Pokemon eggs to keep.)

"Well, before we get to rollin', lets talk business."

(The old-timer produces a rather long contract and a pen.)

    -------- Casual Rules --------

    I) The Birds and the Bees

-- You may use any Pokémon that can produce Eggs and learn Egg moves. The full list is below, sorted by 'farming departments' (basically, Egg Groups).

-- HM Buddies are allowed, but they may not participate in Trainer battles.

-- All games that have a Daycare that is accessible prior to the League challenge are valid for Casual mode. Challengers who wish to play on FR/LG or B2/W2 must play in Expert mode.

    Farming Departments:
    Spoiler:

    II) Gene Pool Diversity

-- You may trade/hack to obtain one Pokémon of your choice from any farming department (total of one, not one from each department). Hacked Pokémon must be legal ("legit").

-- You may trade in any Pokémon that you have bred yourself in another game, in addition to the above-mentioned Pokémon. The Pokémon should be in an egg when traded, if that's not an option then it must be at Lv 1 (Lv 5 in Gen II/III games).

--You may also trade for any foreign Pokémon that are normally available in-game, in addition to the above-mentioned Pokémon. These Pokémon are only to be used for breeding. You must wait to use the Pokémon for breeding until you have reached the area in which the Pokémon is found. Ideally, these Pokémon should know only moves that they learn via level-up, but since they can be difficult to obtain, I'm not imposing move restrictions. If you are able to hack in a "foreign" Pokémon, feel free to do so, but it must know only level-up moves.

    III) Born and Raised

--By the end of the challenge, at least half of your team must be Pokémon obtained through breeding, and one or more of those Pokémon must have at least one egg move.

--The egg move can be any move that the Pokémon doesn't normally know at Lv 1 (Lv 5 for Gen II/III challenges).

--Breeding does not have to be done all at once when you reach the daycare. A good pace is to breed a new team member between each gym challenge. This allows you to keep your team at a decent level overall as you breed new members. But feel free to breed at whatever pace is comfortable for you and sensible for your challenge.

    IV) Tools of the Trade

-- You may use cheats and trading to obtain any and all breeding related items. Specifically, this includes:
    • Power Weight
    • Power Bracer
    • Power Belt
    • Power Anklet
    • Power Band
    • Power Lens
    • Everstone
    • Oval Charm
    • Shiny Charm
    • Destiny Knot

    -------- Expert Rules --------

    Feeling bold? Try Expert mode!

    V) Specialist Training

-- You must choose a farming department and play until the credits roll for the first time using only Pokémon that are from your chosen department. As soon as you are able to obtain a Pokémon from your department, you must catch and use it. You must use only your starter and HM buddy until you are able to obtain a Pokémon from your chosen department.

--You may catch pokemon from any department for breeding or egg hatching purposes, and you are allowed to use HM buddies. However, these pokemon are not to participate in any Trainer battles.

    -- This replaces rule I.

    VI) Living Off the Land

-- The Pokémon hacked or traded under the first clause of rule II may not know Egg moves, TM/HM moves, or tutored moves. This Pokémon must also be from your chosen farming department.

-- You may only trade one Pokémon that you've bred yourself from another game. It must be from your chosen department.

-- Any foreign Pokémon hacked/traded under the third clause of rule II must be from your chosen department.

-- Breeding-related items may not be traded or hacked in.

-- This modifies rule II, and replaces rule IV.

VII) Keep It In the Family

-- By the end of the game, all Pokémon on your team must be obtained through breeding, and all must have at least one egg move that could not be learned via level-up. TM/HM moves and move tutor moves will fill the egg move requirement, as long as they are passed down through breeding.

--Games in which you can't breed until after beating the Elite Four - LG/FR, B2/W2 - have special completion requirements. Finish the game while following rules V and VI. Afterwards, you must beat the Elite Four again after breeding at least five Pokémon from your department. You must use only these Pokémon when you challenge the Elite Four the second time.

    --This replaces rule III.

To be clear, rules V, VI, and VII must all be followed during an Expert run. You can revert to Casual mode at any time and finish the challenge without starting over.

    -------- The Extraordinaire Ribbon --------

Can't get enough of dirty stables and pokemon eggs? You might be a Breeding Extraordinaire! To qualify, you must:
    • Finish the challenge in six different regions using the same department, or
    • Finish the challenge with six different departments in a single region, or
    • Finish the challenge ten times. All ten runs must have different region/department combinations from each other.

If you are playing G/S/C or HG/SS, you can get two regions completed towards your Extraordinaire qualification. To do so, you must:
    • Have at least four Pokémon in your team obtained through breeding, and two or more of them must know at least one egg move that was passed down from a parent and that can't be learned via level-up.
    • Defeat the Pokemon League a second time after obtaining all of the Kanto badges.
    • Defeat Red at Mt. Silver.

A successful Extraordinaire run that is played from in Expert mode qualifies you as an Expert Breeding Extraordinaire.

Normally I don't post in challenges unless I'm signing up for them, but I caught something you may want to alter, and I am actually considering it. In tools of the trade you left out Oval Charm, which would be very useful. Was this an oversight or intentional?

Also Humanesk should be Humanesque, sorry for being a grammar snob haha.

Nah I've never played B2/W2 so I didn't know about it (I found out about the shiny charm by accident just before I posted this thread XD ). Thanks for pointing it out.

Heh yeah I know it's not the proper spelling. I just like the way it looks. It was partly inspired by a great song by Teargas & Plateglass called Arkhangelsk, which I always pronounce as archangel-esque.

Shiny charm is in XY also, so is Oval Charm. And there are people who can cheat them in haha. In the case of BW2 it's impossible to breed within this challenge because access to the day care is post game only.

In those games, and in FR/LG, you can play the game basically as an egg group challenge, then do your breeding and challenge the elite four again.

It's kind of roundabout, but it was important to me that this challenge be open to as many games as possible.

My Emerald B&R challenge is sort of on hold right now, but I got a Japanese SS recently, so of course I had to take a challenge on it.
