Broken hard drive, ugh.

I'd say check with your local chapter of the Geek Squad. They do a pretty good job.
 
I'd try running Spinrite on it first. I've used it on several occasions (and heard quite a few reliable anecdotes, too) and each time I've been able to recover my data from the drive!

Might be a bit pricey tho at US$89...
