Building my first team

    Hi, guys.

I stated earlier that I have never been into competitive battling but that with Generation 6 I wanted to give it a shot. I did some reading and research on Smogon; and although the sheer amount and complexity of the information is overwhelming, I found it educational.

Now that I have some foundational knowledge about competitive battling, I need help constructing a viable team. To provide some context, I am looking to play singles, and I am looking to use Pokemon primarily from the Overused tier. I am not looking to battle in the Uber tier.

My interest is to craft a balanced team. After some reflection, I discerned six roles that I think should be filled to have a balanced team: (1) a physical attacker, (2) a physical wall, (3) a special attacker, (4) a special wall, (5) a supporter/cleric, and (6) a lead or hazer. Now that I have laid out these basic thoughts, her are my initial ideas for a team.

    (1) Physical attacker - Salamence
    (2) Physical wall - ?
    (3) Special attacker - ?
    (4) Special wall - Togekiss
    (5) Supporter/cleric - Chansey
    (6) Lead or hazer - Skarmory or Ferrothorn

If I use Skarmory as a lead, I need a physical wall. If I use Skarmory as a physical wall, I need a lead or hazer. I do not see it as wise to have Skarmory and Ferrothorn on the same team because both are weak to Fire. I am stumped for a special attacker. The following are the abilities, natures, items, and moves I plan to use.

    Salamence
    Ability: Moxie
    Nature: Naive
    Item: Lum Berry
    Moves:
    - Dragon Dance
    - Outrage
    - Earthquake
    - Fire Blast

    Togekiss
    Ability: Serene Grace
    Nature: Calm
    Item: Leftovers or Sharp Beak
    Moves:
    - Air Slash
    - Roost
    - Thunder Wave
    - Nasty Plot

    Chansey
    Ability: Natural Cure
    Nature: Bold
    Item: Eviolite
    Moves:
    - Softboiled or Wish
    - Heal Bell
    - Toxic
    - Seismic Toss

    Skarmory
    Ability: Sturdy
    Nature: Impish
    Item: Leftovers or Shed Shell
    Moves:
    - Spikes or Stealth Rock
    - Roost
    - Whirlwind
    - Brave Bird

Some Pokemon can perform more than one role at once, like Blissey being a special wall AND a cleric, or Skarmory being both a physical wall AND a phazer. You're also missing one key thing in the sets you posted: the Pokemon's EVs. But we can fill those in for you.

    -Salamence: 252 Attack, 252 Speed, 4 Sp.Attack.

There's no point in using Nasty Plot on Togekiss if its only attack is Air Slash. You'll wanna use the paraflinch set anyway. It's fun:

    -Togekiss w/Leftovers
    Nature: Bold/Calm
    Ability: Serene Grace
    EVs: 252 HP, 248 Defense, 8 Sp.Defense OR 252 HP, 248 Sp.Defense, 8 Defense
Moves: Air Slash, Thunder Wave, Roost, Dazzling Gleam

-Chansey: 252 HP, 252 Defense, 4 Sp.Defense. Also, Chansey gets Aromotherapy, not Heal Bell (they do the same thing, basically).

-Skarmory: 252 HP, 252 Defense, 4 Attack. It doesn't need to use Shed Shell since Magnezone is no longer a common sight, so Rokcy Helmet is a good second option.

Oh, as for a special attacker, a couple of options I can think of:

    -Greninja w/Life Orb
    Nature: Timid/Hasty
    Ability: Protean
    EVs: 252 Sp.Attack, 252 Speed, 4 HP
Moves: Hydro Pump/Surf, Ice Beam, Dark Pulse/Extrasensory, Grass Knot/Spikes/U-Turn

    -Volcarona w/Life Orb
    Nature: Timid/Modest
    Ability: Flame Body
    EVs: 252 Sp.Attack, 252 Speed, 4 Defense
Moves: Fiery Dance/Fire Blast, Bug Buzz, Quiver Dance, Giga Drain/Psychic/Roost

There's others, but I'll leave it at that for now.

    EVs: 252 Sp.Attack, 252 Speed, 4 HP
Moves: Hydro Pump/Surf, Ice Beam, Dark Pulse/Extrasensory, Grass Knot/Spikes/U-Turn

    -Volcarona w/Life Orb
    Nature: Timid/Modest
    Ability: Flame Body
    EVs: 252 Sp.Attack, 252 Speed, 4 Defense
Moves: Fiery Dance/Fire Blast, Bug Buzz, Quiver Dance, Giga Drain/Psychic/Roost

For the record, Chansey also gets Heal Bell:
    -Heal Bell/Aromatherapy
    -Seismic Toss
    -Toxic/Thunder Wave/Stealth Rock
    -Soft-Boiled
    Nature: Bold
    EVs: 252 HP/252 Def/4 SDef
    Item: Eviolite
    Ability: Natural Cure

Defensive Togekiss sometimes uses Nasty Plot to break through stall:
    -Thunder Wave/Nasty Plot
    -Air Slash
    -Dazzling Gleam/Aura Sphere/Defog
    -Roost
    Nature: Calm
    EVs: 248 HP/8 Def/252 SDef
    Item: Leftovers
    Ability: Serene Grace

    or
    -Nasty Plot
    -Dazzling Gleam
    -Air Slash
    -Flamethrower/Aura Sphere/Roost
    Nature: Timid
    EVs: 4 HP/252 SAtk/252 Spe
    Item: Life Orb/Leftovers
    Ability: Seren Grace

Greninja needs Extrasensory really badly now because of Mega Venusaur. Hitting Keldeo is a neat bonus as well:
    -Hydro Pump
    -Ice Beam
    -Extrasensory
    -Dark Pulse/Hidden Power (Fire/Grass)/Spikes
    Nature: Timid
    EVs: 252 SAtk/4 SDef/252 Spe
    Item: Life Orb/Focus Sash
    Ability: Protean

Offensive Volcarona may still be viable, but it tends to wear itself down fast without Roost (there are times when Giga Drain may not be enough):
    -Quiver Dance
    -Fiery Dance
    -Bug Buzz
    -Roost
    Nature: Timid
    EVs: 240 HP/252 Def/16 Spe
    Item: Leftovers
    Ability: Flame Body

Just putting this out there, but outside of Earthquake and Fire Blast, Salamence can't deal with Fairies too well. Test out Mega Charizard X or Dragonite. The former is immune to burn while the latter's Multiscale eases setup and it also has access to a decently powered priority move:

    Charizard X:
    -Dragon Dance
    -Flare Blitz/Fire Punch
    -Dragon Claw/Outrage
    -Earthquake/Roost
    Nature: Adamant/Jolly
    EVs: 252 Atk/4 Def/252 Spe
    Item: Charizardite X
    Ability: Blaze

    or
    -Dragon Dance
    -Dragon Claw
    -Fire Punch/Earthquake
    -Roost
    Nature: Adamant
    EVs: 144 HP/244 Atk/120 Spe
    Item: Charizardite X
    Ability: Blaze

    or
    -Fire Punch/Earthquake
    -Dragon Claw
    -Will-o-Wisp
    -Roost
    Nature: Careful
    EVs: 248 HP/148 SDef/112 Spe
    Item: Charizardite X
    Ability: Blaze

    Dragonite:
    -Dragon Dance
    -Dragon Claw/Outrage
    -Extreme Speed
    -Earthquake
    Nature: Adamant
    EVs: 24 Def/252 Atk/232 Spe
    Item: Lum Berry/Weakness Policy
    Ability: Multiscale
