Is it ever right to mix canon and fanon? Is it better to just stick to story made completely of canon characters, and the same for fanon?
Well, I was just thinking this. People tend to think that their favourite star from the anime/games etc. is suddenly thrust into a relationship with some one dragged from some randomer's head. Is it just a way for people to destory the orginal charactor by making them OOC? Is it really possible to add a minor charactor from the games without destoring the fic as well?
    :-/

You can have a mix as long as the original character isn't OOC-ified. I tend to think a lot of fictions -cough-Animaexmachina-cough- use some characters from the canon. You can create new characters into canon or add old characters into fanon - as long as nothing is ruined, I would probably say. This does that pretty well, right?

As long as you keep the canon characters from straying into Out of Character territory, like Ninja Caterpie said, there's nothing stopping you from using a mix of canon and fanon characters, except your own opinion.

    I, personally, don't mind both.

One of the best things about writing in the Pokemon fandom is the fact that it is so open-ended. As one of my best friends put it, she can write a fic with an all original cast of characters and it's still a Pokemon fanfic.

Lots of authors have combined original characters with canon characters. The way to have it all actually work is to keep the canon characters interacting around and with the original characters the same exact way that they interact around and with the other canon characters.

To put it in a simple, fandom-related way: Ash is Ash, no matter who he's with. If Ash reacts in a different way to the original character, like say he reacts to how beautiful she is instead of being excited that she's a Pokemon trainer and she wants to battle, then the original character has "twisted" the canon world. But if Ash reacts the way Ash reacts to everyone he's ever met to canon to the original character, then the story is fine.

It's just a fine matter of keeping canon facts straight. There are facts in canon that can't really be disputed, but if the author works well at integrating their original thoughts, then the story works. It's like Fakemon, which was discussed in another thread on this forum.

Really, it's just how well the author can make it all work.

Yeah, I just got through explaining the canon/fanon thing in one of Pikalover10's fics. A canon/fanon fic can be great, just as long as the canon characters have the same personalities and traits of their actual canon self. Otherwise, you might as well just insert another character because people, more than likely, will not enjoy it.
