Card Protection Question

Hi there! I'm new here and this is my first thread/post so please bare with me if I am asking a dumb question! :paranoid:

I recently bought a pokemon base set limited booster box, the cool thing is I pulled some pretty neat cards out of them Magneton, Zapdos, Alakazam, Raichu, Gyarados, Poliwrath, Mewtwo and lots of other awesome foils/rares... but! The main card I pulled is a Charizard in mint, pristine condition. At the moment this card is sitting in my binder covered in 2 normal protector sleeves, I'm worried that I'm not protecting this card enough. What do you guys think? Should I go about protecting it more, if so how? Also should I protect some of the other cards as well like Venusaur or Mewtwo etc? I'm not from USA so getting it protected from PSA rating isn't in my books at the moment, maybe in the future or if you guys think I should as after all it is Charizard in mint conditon.

    Thanks guys!

A binder should be fine for the short term... unless you can acquire some of those harder protective "sleeves" that are very sturdy and can then acquire some sort of box or case to put that in, since those harder protective sleeves I'm talking about don't fit in the slots of a card page meant for a binder.

    Thanks for the quick reply!

At the moment I have some UltraPro Toploaders but they are 'thick' ones, do you think they would be ok? What do you recommend I do?

That would probably work in the short term, and possibly could be a longer term solution if you end up protecting enough cards with those toploaders, so the toploaders don't move around inside the tin so much.

Sounds good. My plan is to get some Card Saver Ones which are tighter protectors, kinda like Top Loaders. I'm going to put 2 protective sleeves over the card, put it in the toploader/cardsaver and then put it in my pokemon tin which is lined with bubble wrap. Sound good?

One of the most accomplished collectors I know insists on keeping everything in binders, not PSA cases or anything else like that. I don't think she even uses sleeves because the size of them can press against the binder sleeve and warp the card, but you can get "perfect fit" sleeves that fit exactly the proportions of the card and fit into the binder sleeves. Binders are better than tins because cards can bang around in a tin, plus the weight of the binder keeps the cards flat. Binders also offer the best protection from fading due to light exposure. So yeah, that's what I would recommend! I don't recommend putting a card into two sleeves, I think the card is more likely to warp that way.
And you should definitely protect the other holos, some of them like mewtwo and alakazam are actually quite sought after.

I have protected all of my holos in a new card sleeve that I have bought. They are 'Ultra Pro Deck Protectors' they feel much tighter and fit the card better. I'm putting them on ALL my holos and base set cards and putting them in my binder. What do you mean by 'warped'? Will this happen with my new method I just mentioned? If so how do I stop that.

    Thanks!

Warping in that case meaning that they would bend at the corners (and, in some cases, the whole card could acquire a curve to it). And the solution to preventing that is right in Rocket_Executive's post: getting "perfect fit" sleeves that match the card's dimensions exactly, or not even using any sleeves at all when putting them in the binder pages.

Well the Ultra Pro Deck Protectors are really tight, they are 10x more tighter than the simple sleeves. Do you think these would be ok?

Also, do you have a list of all the pokemon card collections from base set up to the latest realeses? I'm collecting all of them.

Can you move the card around in the sleeve at all?

Another user compiled a spreadsheet here:

It's missing some of the newer sets, though, and may be missing a few of the promotional sets.

    Awesome! Thanks for that!

As for the card - Obviously with a bit of pressure it will come out of the entrance but it doesn't slide out as such. It doesn't really move left and right in the sleeve either. To be honest getting the cards in the sleeve in the first place needed a bit of a push and it felt really quite snug. They are in that sleeve, in my binder and my binder is sitting on my shelf and is never really moved around at such force that it would be able to move around move in the sleeve anyway.

They sound like they are perfect fit sleeves. As long as the sleeve doesn't fit so tightly into the binder sleeve that it causes curving in the card, it will be fine. It's ok for the sleeve to move around in the binder sleeve, you just don't want them to be taut.
