I have never done it before and nice to meet you :)
     
    https://youtu.be/QBfYdb87ecodude I think this is what your talking about.dont get me wrong,I'm no seasoned Spriter,but that's overworld trainer Sprite editing.just follow the video,look at the suggestions for the full body trainer Sprite.as for the animation,I'll help you with that,or I'll find someone to refer you to.(hopefully)
     
    The video that you provided is for emerald not that changes a lot i think but since consoles change gba>ds maybe it is important please if you know more tell me so i can start :)
