gameshark problems

I just got a gameshark, and I pt the master code in for Pokemon RubyVersion and some codes ive wanted. But no success my gameshark has a cylindrical button at top right and a oval button and the left that switches back and forst (left to right) and the cylindrical button just gets pushed down, now i dont know what im doing wrong and i think you might know.. any help would be appreciated
