We've all started games and, for whatever reason, put it down and never looked back. Maybe it got too confusing to keep playing, like Path of Exile did for me. Maybe the way forward wasn't obvious enough and it got frustrating, like Hollow Knight did for me. Or maybe you saved, quit, and got wrapped up in an entirely different game, only for the original to completely fall off your radar, like Dishonored did for me.

So! Convince me: Hollow Knight. Why should I pick it back up?

And after you're done, it's your turn! Name a game you quit playing early and see if anyone will convince you to pick it back up.

Ah, I love Hollow Knight! Let me make a quick case in its defense: it has some of the tightest gameplay, most gorgeous graphics, and deepest lore of any recent indie metroidvania on the market.

As a platformer it feels incredibly satisfying, even if it does drag when you have to backtrack. The combat is very well balanced and, while patience is definitely needed, the rewards for victory feels very well earned. The story can be as complex or as simple as you want. You can blaze through the story if you're not looking to get too deep into it. While the world of Hollow Knight is complicated and rich in history, but not at all required to pay attention to if you're not going for 100%. But if you appreciate little details and leaving no stone unturned, some of the most compelling and (in some cases) heartbreaking tales are told through the residents of Hollow Nest. I don't want to spoil anything for you though! Exploration is also a huge part of any metroidvania, and Hollow Knight is visually amazing in its mood setting, use of color, and atmosphere - it's easy to get lost, yes, but you'll never want for more visual appeal. Plus, the OST is among some of my favorite video game music to date!

Lastly, Hollow Knight 2 (effectively - Silksong is not a sequel per se, iirc) is coming out soon too and it's guaranteed to have ironed out any issues of the original. Having completed the first one will no doubt enhance the experience of the second, imo!

Now, convince me to finish Fire Emblem: Awakening.
