Ok a little topic for any NBA fans out there like myself.
What's your take on the big time trades that have occured in the past week or so? If you need your mind refreshing here they are below:
First between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Memphis Grizzlies:
Lakers Send:
Kwame Brown
Javaris Crittenton
Aaron Mckie (Not a player anymore, but was still under contract, and is part of the deal for salary cap reasons)
1st Round Draft Pick 2008
1st Round Draft Pick 2010
Draft Rights To Marc Gasol
Cash Considerations
Grizzlies Send:
Pau Gasol
2nd Round Draft Pick 2010
I think this trade was absolute daylight robbery, and the Lakers have gained so much from this by gaining an all-star calibre forward. When Andrew Bynum returns into the lineup, they will have 3 offensive options, of course not forgetting Kobe. Having Lamar Odom as a 4th option? That's depth for you. Memphis made a horrible decision I feel. Yes they get some salary cap relief and will have money to spend in the off-season, but they could have gotten a much better deal than this. I mean I don't care whether Kwame Brown has a valuable expiring contract, he is still the biggest scrub in the NBA. There are far more better options than this trade. I mean the Bulls were willing to give up a large amount of players from their core unit, but at the time Grizzlies turned it down.
The trade turns the Lakers into a championship calibre team, while Memphis solidify their position as one of the bum teams in the league. Daylight robbery.
As for the other trade, just, wow!
Phoenix Sends:
Shawn Marion
Marcus Banks
Miami Sends:
Shaquille O'Neal
Something needed to be done here. The Miami Heat are having a truely horrible season, and got an athletic swingman + allstar in Shawn Marion, who will now likely make Miami a running team instead of running halfcourt sets all the time and playing slow ball.
The deal makes sense in Phoenix's case as well. Before the deal, Phoenix were simply pure offense. They would have no trouble scoring at least 110 points a game, but didn't play a lick of defense. They got to the West finals and semi finals respectively in the last few years, but didn't have that big guy they could depend on. Remember the saying, offense wins games, defense wins championships. Now with Shaq, although he is declining quite rapidly, he still brings with him his ability to rebound and be a defensive presence as well as another option offensively. I'll be honest, when I first heard about the deal I thought it was horrible for the Suns because it could mess up their run and gun style of play considering how slow Shaq could be, but thinking about it now, it means Amare Stoudemire can now go back to his more favoured position at the Power Forward spot and be a huge threat. To go deeper into the playoffs, they need a veteran presence working inside the key, and as long as Shaq stays healthy, they could finally get over that defensive hump. Shaq now has the motivation again knowing he is on a winning team now.
Your thoughts? After my essay xD.
EDIT: Don't forget Jason Kidd may be on his way soon enough as well from the Nets!
