Crazy NBA Trades

Ok a little topic for any NBA fans out there like myself.

What's your take on the big time trades that have occured in the past week or so? If you need your mind refreshing here they are below:

First between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Memphis Grizzlies:

    Lakers Send:
    Kwame Brown
    Javaris Crittenton
Aaron Mckie (Not a player anymore, but was still under contract, and is part of the deal for salary cap reasons)
    1st Round Draft Pick 2008
    1st Round Draft Pick 2010
    Draft Rights To Marc Gasol
    Cash Considerations

    Grizzlies Send:
    Pau Gasol
    2nd Round Draft Pick 2010

I think this trade was absolute daylight robbery, and the Lakers have gained so much from this by gaining an all-star calibre forward. When Andrew Bynum returns into the lineup, they will have 3 offensive options, of course not forgetting Kobe. Having Lamar Odom as a 4th option? That's depth for you. Memphis made a horrible decision I feel. Yes they get some salary cap relief and will have money to spend in the off-season, but they could have gotten a much better deal than this. I mean I don't care whether Kwame Brown has a valuable expiring contract, he is still the biggest scrub in the NBA. There are far more better options than this trade. I mean the Bulls were willing to give up a large amount of players from their core unit, but at the time Grizzlies turned it down.

The trade turns the Lakers into a championship calibre team, while Memphis solidify their position as one of the bum teams in the league. Daylight robbery.

As for the other trade, just, wow!

    Phoenix Sends:
    Shawn Marion
    Marcus Banks

    Miami Sends:
    Shaquille O'Neal

Something needed to be done here. The Miami Heat are having a truely horrible season, and got an athletic swingman + allstar in Shawn Marion, who will now likely make Miami a running team instead of running halfcourt sets all the time and playing slow ball.

The deal makes sense in Phoenix's case as well. Before the deal, Phoenix were simply pure offense. They would have no trouble scoring at least 110 points a game, but didn't play a lick of defense. They got to the West finals and semi finals respectively in the last few years, but didn't have that big guy they could depend on. Remember the saying, offense wins games, defense wins championships. Now with Shaq, although he is declining quite rapidly, he still brings with him his ability to rebound and be a defensive presence as well as another option offensively. I'll be honest, when I first heard about the deal I thought it was horrible for the Suns because it could mess up their run and gun style of play considering how slow Shaq could be, but thinking about it now, it means Amare Stoudemire can now go back to his more favoured position at the Power Forward spot and be a huge threat. To go deeper into the playoffs, they need a veteran presence working inside the key, and as long as Shaq stays healthy, they could finally get over that defensive hump. Shaq now has the motivation again knowing he is on a winning team now.

Your thoughts? After my essay xD.

EDIT: Don't forget Jason Kidd may be on his way soon enough as well from the Nets!

People who say Shaq will suck with the Suns are forgetting that when healthy he is one of the best centers the game has ever seen. Phoenix needs the D anyways.

lol'd at the Lakers trade in all honesty.

NBA fans on PC. I must be in heaven. xD

I must admit I have only been watching NBA for a couple years, but this season is certainly one full of excitement. Garnett and Allen to the Celtics, Korver to the Jazz, Gasol to the Lakers, Shaq to the Suns and Marion to the Heat. Not to mention the very close race in the Western Conference. 10 out of the 15 West teams can make the playoffs, but since they're in the West they have a disadvantage.

The trade I have enjoyed the most in 2008 is the Gasol trade. Kobe badly needed a sidekick, and he got it. The Lakers now have a very good chance of becoming a West champion, or possibly NBA champs. They have to get through the Hornets and the Celtics first, though. Darko/Kwame frontcourt should be...interesting to watch. xD

The trade that was sort of a "WTF why'd they do that" trade to me was the Suns-Heat trade. I think the main weakness of the Suns team is their defence. Marion was one of their best defenders, and they lost him to an aging Shaq. Shaq is past his prime and I don't think he can keep up with the Suns run and gun style.

But at least Marion is making the Heat team run. Wade-Marion combo should be interesting, and if they end up with the first pick next year then I shall be keeping a clsoe eye on Wade-Marion-Beasley. This combo could make the Heat the playoff contenders that they once were.

This didn't happen in 2008, but the Garnett/Allen trades were definitely my favourite. What a dramatic turnaround for the Celtics.

Yeah I had my doubts about the Shaq trade as well, though I think people underestimate what the motivation of being with a winning team again will do to him. He is already practicing with the team now, and his health and fitness is far better than anybody including the Sun's thought it would be. I think Kerr has made a good decision. It's a win now situation they need. Nash isn't getting any younger, and some of the other players are either in their prime or starting to age, so now is the right time to add that missing piece.

As for the Heat, I watched their game against the Nuggets and they looked so much more comfortable at a higher pace. Dorrell Wright looked great, Marion was doing his thing, Mark Blount did well too. They definitely need a new Point Guard, as Jason Williams isn't cut out for the job. I'd like to see more of his minutes go to Marcus Banks. I think D-Wade needs to rely on his teamates a little more though. He threw up some badly chosen shots again. Granted a lot of them went in, but nearer the end of the game he was pulling up for 3's which he shouldn't even be taking.

Ah, well the Nuggets are my favorite team and they were talking as though Ron Artest would most likely be the next to be traded and they put him with the Nuggets. I for one wouldn't mind, but then again I would rather him stay away.

As for Shaq and Gasol, the Grizzlies should have kept him. Instead they traded him and pretty much all they had left to Kwame Brown? And Marcus Banks? That's just crazy!

Though I do think that Shaq for Shawn Marion was a really good trade, but I picture the Suns being the "Patriots" of basketball. Then again the Heat should do better. Shawn Marion is In better condition health wise than Shaq was and seems to be more of a team player.

But I guess well just have to wait and see.

Marcus Banks was part of the Shaq deal ;) He's with Miami now. I'd like to see him get some good minutes, I don't see Jason Williams being part of Miami's future anymore.

Nuggets fan eh? How about J.R. Smith last night? What was it? 8 three pointers? I watched the game, he was just in a zone. Amazing shooting.

Oh my mistake :P Yeah J.R is the man. Under pressure or not he can hit it, and IMO I think he's the best on the team all around. Though Iverson and Carmello make quite a team, I just think J.R doesn't get the attention he deserves. It's all Iverson and Anthony. Either way I'm a fan, it just makes it better when we win! :D

I think Shaq wants championship #5 REALLY badly. I think people underestimate what he is capable of.

BTW I loved Gregg Popovich's comments about the Laker trade. It's true though, what a lousy idea.

I'm surprised the LAPD aren't after the Lakers because they robbed Memphis.

Breaking news is that Jason Kidd has moved to the West and has joined the Dallas Mavericks. As far as I know the deal is:

    Dallas receives:
    Jason Kidd
    Malik Allen

    New Jersey receives:
    Devin Harris
    Jerry Stackhouse
    Devean George
    Maurice Ager
    Desagna Diop
    Cash considerations
    1st round pick 2010

I think there will be another seperate deal just to even the rosters out, with New Jersey sending Antoine Wright to Dallas for a 2nd round pick.

Apparently the Net's will buyout Stackhouses contract and he might return back to Dallas if he waits 30 days.

It's not completely official yet, but it's as good as done.

I was just reading this and now I think that the Mavs will have a really good chance at the Championship. With Kidd and Dirk both on the same team, they will be interesting to watch. Maybe another NBA "Dynamic Duo" Though the Mavs are losing a lot of really good players that contribute so much to the team, such as George, Stackhouse, and Harris. The Nets may step it up a bit also, now with Carter (My favorite player), Jefferson, Harris, Stackhouse, and a few more. I'm just waiting to see the next crazy trade if there is one.

I think a Net's team without Jason Kidd on it is done. Vince is nowhere near the player he was either.

How about Devean George of all people delaying/blocking the trade? xD I can understand he needs to look out for himself though. He potentially loses a lot of money that he would have had if he was able to stay with the Mavs. I can almost guarantee something will be sorted though.

I bet New Jersey were a bit annoyed though, considering they didn't play any of their outgoing players in the trade for their match against the Raptors, and lost by 19, but Dallas playing their outgoing players in a win against Portland.

I think Dallas fans are annoyed with Devean though as they want to see Kidd play asap. I understand it's hard for the guy though. I mean the Dallas' franchise are looking out for themselves by making the trade, but Devean is being made to look like the bad guy for looking out for himself. Mavs fans just need a bit of patience, the trade deadline is only a week away.

Devean George should just accept going to New Jersey instead of whining about it like a high schooler getting benched in the state championship. Suck it up. Your team could've landed the best triple-doubler in NBA history. But, NO, you had to go and open your mouth

The crazy trades just keep coming don't they?

    https://www.nba.com/hawks/news/Hawks_Acquire_Bibby_021608.html

Bibby for Lue, Wright, Johnson and Williams. Good move for the Hawks. They gain a veteran playmaker point guard that can lead them to the playoffs.

Talk of Bibby being traded has been going around basketball forums for a while. I wanted him to go to Cleveland because Bron needs a playmaking point guard companion. The Cavs have one of the not-so-great backcourts in the NBA, so Bibby would've been a nice addition. Besides, Larry Hughes, the Cavs PG, is really an SG. Besides he's not that good.

Man this season is crazy as. Lots of crazy trades.

Yeah, some crazy stuff happening before this years trade deadline. When I first read about it, I thought it was Joe Johnson and Marvin Williams, I just shook my head, but then I realised it was Anthony and Shelden.

I think the fact that the Hawks are 7th in the playoff spots at All-Star Weekend, regarded as half-way through the season,is a testemant to the fact the Eastern Conference just simply sucks. Atlanta have been playing the young, developing team for too long. It's wins that really count, and getting Bibby shows their intent to keep in the playoffs.

At the same time I don't think it's bad for the Kings. I mean Udrih is more than capable of starting and has proved it. Plenty of depth in Sacramento now. Wonder if this is a pre-curser to Ron Artest being moved?

And here we have another crazy trade:

    https://www.nba.com/mavericks/news/Kidd_trade_021908.html

Kidd, Allen and Wright for Harris, Diop, Hassell, Ager, Van Horn and draft picks.

It's just me but I think this is a kinda bad trade for the Mavs. They've given up their future, pretty much. Giving up Diop hurts their frontcourt.

Nets meanwhile get some young talent, but no pass-first PG. The West is just getting stronger and stronger. But with all these draft picks, the East in a few years will get good people while the West teams just get old.
