After my very first private trombone lesson, my teacher took my mother aside. "I just don't think this is going to work out," he told her.
I wasn't born the same way other babies were. The bones in my arms and elbows were fused together, allowing me limited movement. It was a rare disability, but it was even rarer that it happened in both arms. I would have to learn how to use my arms to do things other ordinary kids could do—pick up a glass of water, read a book, brush my hair…
The orthopedist at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, but it was likely that I would end up being in more pain and likely to suffer severe arthritis later on in life. My parents decided against the surgery and let me stay the way I was.
Time passed, and I got help from someone who worked in occupational therapy. She helped me learn how to hold a pencil with my right hand. However, I found that it was easier to use my left hand, and after a few failed attempts at fixing that, she allowed me to continue using my left hand to write with. Now whenever at school I always run into at least one person who is baffled by how I write. But they are never freaked out by it—it's quite the opposite. People have told me that the way I write is "cool" and "amazing," and then go on to emulate my writing style—not to mock me, but to see how hard it is to write the way I can. They are always unable to mimic my style perfectly, and their letters end up as messy as mine when I attempt to write with my right hand.
Aside from writing, I had decided to pick up an instrument. I chose to play the trombone, an instrument that requires my left hand to hold onto the handle of the horn while my right hand moves the slide. I started in fourth grade and managed to play all the pieces with little problem once I got the hang of the slide. When I entered fifth grade, my parents got me a private teacher. After our first lesson together, he took my parents aside and told me that I would never be able to play the trombone. I continued having lessons with him while playing in the band at school. As of now, I am nearing the end of the second book my private instructor had me buy, and I am the second chair in my high school's award-winning band. And if my school's band did not use seniority as a method of chair placement, I would have likely been first chair.
To my trombone teacher: Thank you.
I am grateful to all three of you for sticking with me and ultimately supporting me as I discovered many unique ways to using my arms.
