Ok, so I never paid attention to what Oak says, since, well, '05 when I had a go on a friend's FireRed, but playing on my LeafGreen I got in '08 to ease the boredom, I just noticed that you don't as I originally assumed, bring parts for the pokedex (it's already there at the start) from Viridian City, but instead, you bring a custom pokeball!

But it's never actually shown to us, and we never hear squeak of it again. What do you guys reckon it is?
I reckon it might contain the Emerald Orb needed for Rayquaza in Hg/Ss.....but that's a bit farfetch'd....

It could be a snag ball and Oak is secretly planning to take over the world with Shadow Pokemon.

I always just figured Oak was secretly one of the baddies.
Harmless old Prof. who can't remember his grandkids' names? No, that's just a front. Oak's a criminal mastermind, and all this time he's been pulling the strings ... tasking you to capture one of everything, sending out his son to check on your progress and keep you moving forward, dropping items and such in your path to make sure you have no trouble getting the Gym leaders out of the way and creating a powerful team that can obliterate the rival gang (those wannabes, the Rockets) and gain the confidence of guards, cops, etc. with your childish innocence so you can easily make your way into various caves and dungeons to capture all the coveted Legendary Pokemon in the region.
Not sure you can take Mewtwo? No problem, Oak's arranged from the beginning for you to stumble across a Master Ball - and to gain more than enough experience in your travels to control the creature once you've captured it.
Then he buddies up to you and tells you how proud he is of you ... once in a while you deposit a few of your legendary Pokemon in a mysterious PC box ... maybe Oak looks after them ... maybe he lets them out of their Pokeballs once in a while ... maybe he uses them to run a few ... errands ....
Oops, but they gained some experience in battle and it shows up as a small Stat increase.
Eh, pass it off as a PC box glitch, the kid'll never be the wiser....

lol at the above posters theory. I believe its just a poke ball maybe a dusk ball or something that hasn't caught on just yet?

I always assumed it was a master ball. Thought the idea of him smuggling drugs into Pallet via unsuspecting kids is pretty funny.

    Lol.

I suppose it could be the Master Ball...

...I like Emlam's theory. It could explain why Red's Espeon dissappeared between GSC and Hg/Ss, couldn't it?

It could also explain why Moltres dissapeared from Mount Ember, yet it wasn't in my box!

And why the legendaries re-appear in Hg/Ss....it's obvious Oak lost control of them!

I thought it was a regular pokeball with the name Oak on it made by Kurt.

That's possible. He could have asked Kurt from Johto to make him a Pokéball from Apricorns (or whatever it was called).

In Firered/Leafgreen it could be the 5 poke balls you get at the start of the game :)

But they're no different from normal pokeballs....I suppose they catch slightly better, but that's because it's on lv.2/3 pokemon xD.

It could be a snag ball and Oak is secretly planning to take over the world with Shadow Pokemon.

Not possible because any ball you use with the Snag Machine becomes a Snag Ball. There are no actual Snag Ball designs, so that's not it.

Anyway, I always assumed it was just the first 5 Pokeballs you get. They're not exactly custom. It was just a fancy was of talking about it, especially being the first game (as it was said in the original RBY as well as FRLG).

Wow so hilarious I couldn't stop laughing hahahah. I think I remember him mentioning he was helping Silph Co with the master ball. I could be wrong but idk it seems as though I have heard that

I knew it, he just had to be evil. the most innocent old people who can't remember their grandchild's name are always crazy and evil.

I always though when he said "Custom Pokeball" it was one of those weird n00by things. IDK, like how if I started from Fuschia and went to Viridian how the gyms would start harder and end easier. But yeah, probably just a plain old Pokeball and he was making a big deal out of it...
