When D/P/Pt brought in the Pokeradar, it was a new way of obtaining shinies a little bit easier if you followed certain rules to keep your chain going. However, with X/Y, they have brought it back again, with a few new features to it.

So, what I am asking is, which Pokeradar gen did you prefer and why?

If I had to go with one, I'd probably pick the one from Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, since that's the one I'm most familiar with.

When it comes to shiny-chaining, I'm generally not too good at it, unfortunately. I have tried it plenty of times, but have never been able to encounter any shiny Pokémon in any way. The chances of encounter increase after every time we run into thirty Pokémon, or so I've heard, which sort of sounds like a hassle.

I've tried practicing and whatnot, but sadly, I wind up stepping on the wrong grass patch one way or another, causing the chain to stop. It's slightly a frustrating experience.

DPPt's was much more simplistic and easier to use, not to mention XY had very few grassy patches that were big enough for you to really be able to use it in. However, that's not saying much from someone who has never chained his way to a shiny.

I dont know about the X/Y since havent played it yet. But I love Platinum's pokeradar, it's one the things that make me go back to it, especially the shiny chaining part. It's also quite enoyable tbh, it's like a sudoku for me. I mean how hard it is depends on what are you chaining for, but generally speaking it's easy for all I know.

There were so many changes from D/P/Pt's pokeradar to X/Y's pokeradar, but for the worse really. To be quite honest, there is only one pro to the change and the rest are cons.

    Pro:
An extra patch shakes. That's it.

    Cons:
Some patches can break the chain, not revealing the pokemon.
The patches that shake don't follow the 1234 rule from D/P/Pt.
If you are forced to go towards the edges, the chain can break randomly bringing up no shakes at all. I never had this issue in D/P/Pt.
There is very few places to chain, and not enough 9x9 squares to at least chain in. Refer to previous con.
Very few 4 distance patches appear, which is the ones that you want to go in. A lot of them seem to be either 1 or 2 away from you.

    Verdict:
Ever since the change to the Pokeradar in X/Y, I've never had a chain above 8. D/P/Pt's Pokeradar I can get around the 20-40 mark about 60% of the time. The mechanics from D/P/Pt's should have been left alone, because tbh, only reaching Chain 8 is a fault with the new pokeradar, not mine. I've acquired 13 shinies from D/P/Pt, and 0 from X/Y which says a lot. D/P/Pt's Pokeradar wins by a huge margin.
