DDoS'rs are back..

So if hackers are behind all this server insanity, then...could they put viruses, keyloggers, and trojans on the site? Maybe steal Rukario's password?

If this is true, then isn't every single user on PC in danger?

I certainly don't want my account to be hacked!
No I do not think so I mean look above. I asked the same question and if the DDoS is not meant for you no harm is done.

No, they won't be able to do that. The only thing an attack like this involves is flooding the server with phony data. This flood prevents it from responding to legitimate users.

If these problems keep recurring, might PC have to switch servers or something, like what happened back in 04 I think? If these attacks keep happening on this server all we might be able to do in the end is switch servers. I dunno it just reminded me of how a whole bunch of members had to re-join PC years ago.

Then why not just back up all the data, and switch hosts? It's not that hard.
That's not going to stop these DDoS attacks. Switching hosts or servers will only cause us to have to wait for DNS propagation since they will be changing IP addresses. After that's complete, the attacks will more than likely resume again.

DDoS attacks are incredibly difficult to deal with. There are no simple fixes for them. They seem to be dealing with these attacks rather well, honestly, since the site is still going (even with a few downtimes here and there).

Figure out who's behind them and pursue legal action. DDoSing is illegal pretty much everywhere.

much easier said then done.. most of the hits are from bots (compromised PCs) or are using spoofed IPs.. At best, all we can do is try to limit the effect it has on our servers..
BTW, PC isn't the target of this.. It's been hitting the main (server) IP mostly with a few 100 per each other IP assigned to this box.

Until they (the DDoS'rs) give up, we all just have to put up with the errors, slow page loads, and random can't connects. :(

Seeing as according to the admins, PC isn't the target, switching hosts would solve the problem.

switching hosts isn't a viable solution right now.. too many things to consider, not to mention the size of PC (its traffic and so on)

It really needs to stay on a dedicated server

umm my point is: It IS on one now.. and to move it would be cost prohibitive.

It's not a dedicated server if there are other sites being hosted on it...

Well the rep I just received told me what you were getting confused about. The site has a static IP, not a dedicated server. A dedicated server would mean that Pokecommunity is the only site on that server, which would mean any attack that would slow down PC, would be meant for PC. This is obviously not the case, because it has been said that what is slowing down PC is an attack on another site.

Seriously Harrison..

The rep said "It is. Dedicated server = Permanent. Can't be permanent if it changes." It obviously does not mean what you think it means. It means "PC is already on one." Basically what what Rukario said after I gave you the rep.

All that assuming you are talking about the rep I gave you..

I am curious to what you can do to stop these? I do not know a lot about this subject so forgive me if this is..noobish..

just to clarify, PC is on a dedicated server that happens to host a couple of other sites to help pay for the server.. the server is configured and optimized specifically for PC.

the attack was targeting the main server IP (root server, or whatever you want to call it) as well as a few of the other IP's we have assigned to that box.
