Question: Deactivating accounts?

If we were to prune accounts, how would that work in respect to people requesting an account pruned so they can have the username? For example Gonz0 wanted Gonzo banned to take that name, but he couldn't anyway since there are no name changes? The only way it'd work is if someone already had an account, requested one was pruned and then made a new account with that name... Right? (This is meant to be a question but kind of doesn't sound like it...)

Although I suppose pruning these accounts could free up server space to possibly allow for name changes in certain cases? Or not, I really don't know - once again this was meant to be a question but badly worded :p

I know for one that Gonz0 would totally switch to a new account. I probably would as well.
 
If we did prune accounts, I think it's fair if you contact the user through some automated PM or e-mail so they're fine with it. Who knows, maybe someone out of the blue can be back after 5+ years, I'm sure it has happened before. If they don't respond within x number of days or hours, then the pruning can continue.
 
Being inactive =/= making an account and log in never after.

Personally, I wouldn't mind pruning my profile if I never was an active user. I'd prolly forget my password or forget that PC ever existed... We're talking about people with 0 - few post on their accounts with last login a few days/weeks after registering.

If someone has like 100 posts or so, some VMs and didn't login for a few months, it could mean he or she is on hiatus. SO being temporaly inactive is something different than never being active at all.

But to be fair, I know of a few people who joined a long time ago and were happy with their join date even though they didn't post until years after they joined. So to assume they don't care at all isn't entirely a safe assumption. I know of accounts I have on other sites that are years old and I barely ever log on but I wouldn't want them gone, lol. Not saying pruning is bad, just that people might care.

That's a good idea. I've seen several other sites contact me after a long period of inactivity, usually saying my account will close in a month or so if it doesn't see activity.
If I didn't want my account to be purged, i'd log back in. If I didn't care, I just let it slide.
That would work, and it's fair because if the user doesn't return that could be their way of "agreeing."
And like you said, old members might even come back and start bringing in some bonus activity.

Though if they don't use the e-mail the site has on hand for the user, that might be a different story, but at the same time what are you gonna do? :<
