Dear everybody who has learned a second language:

Oh god. You should've seen me back at Kindergarten. Everyone was speaking in Indonesian outside of class and I had no idea what they're all talking about. o_o

Everyone has already mentioned it, but yeah, you know what they say: practice makes perfect. If it weren't for my Indonesian-speaking environment I wouldn't be able to get fluent in Indonesian haha.

Also, to clarify, yes I'm a native Indonesian. And no, Indonesian is not my first language. English is my first language while Indonesian is supposed to be my mother tongue.

I've learned Chinese back at Elementary but I never bothered continuing after that. I can still read and write the most basic of sentences tho, like how I helped one of my seniors in high school deal with his Chinese Language lessons.

I studied Japanese in High School, probably one of the most fluent speakers from my year, and now that I've graduated I'm self-studying. I got the basic sentence structures down, I just need to expand my vocabulary. :T
 
Hmmm... In my case I wanted to understand the DBZ episodes, so it motivated me to pay attention in class. Yeh, no-comprende kind of. I can write it (duh), read it (not out loud), hear and understand. But... speaking it... not so... well. But motivation and practice are yer best friends. Oh, and ask what you cant understand. Like a teacher said:
"There are no stupid questions, there are stupids that don't ask".
that motivated me too.
Oh I forgot:
Spanish is my main language, English my second. That's it so far...
Guess I'm too Naive to learn a third one

Mi idioma segunda es espanol. Porque no habia otras clases de idiomas. No hablo espanol mucho; lo siento.

Admittedly, my spanish has wanned over the years from disuse. I've been trying to find more opportunities to re-learn it and practice it with the massive latin american population in Monterey, but alas....DARK SOULS.
 
i learned english in school because it was part of the curriculum

oh, and i also learned english from watching a lot of cartoons when i was a kid
 
Apart from English I can read and write Arabic; I speak broken Arabic. As well that thought I can understand and speak bits and pieces of Turkish and French, but not much.
 
I learnt Spanish in primary and high school and then into college. I only really took it because the family are hoping to migrate to Spain. I love the Spanish language and it's quite easy to speak. I'm also a really big fan of this Spanish TV show and I really like two Spanish artists so then from watching and listening to them it helps me to pick up on words here and there to add to my vocabulary.
 
I had to take french classes from grades 4-9 in my curriculum. I took an extra three classes (grades 10, 11 and first year university). I think I started getting better than peers at learning was when I got motivation to try and learn as much of the language as I could - and I started reading short stories, novels, etc in french. Even if you don't know all the words, I started off with just skim-reading and seeing I could get the plot down, and then more specifics later, etc. :3
