Of all the Pokemon stories, my favorites are the ones where the heroes are the ones looking out for the wellbeing of Pokemon. Who could forget that episode of the anime where Ash rescues an abandoned Charmander from a rain storm, and which of us hasn't wanted to cuddle and soothe the poor baby Cubone whose mother was killed by Team Rocket in the Gen I games? Pokemon is a perfect medium for telling stories about animal welfare, ecology, and conservation, but all too often all that is overshadowed by the competitive sports aspect. It's time to change that!

Imagine a game where the story centers around rescuing Pokemon from abuse, preserving wild Pokemon habitats, building relationships with Pokemon via means other than battling, and just generally treating Pokemon as more than just tools for fighting or a means to filling the Pokedex. That's what I want Pokemon Shelter to be about.

About 2 years ago, I started working on a ROM hack to add a genetics system to Pokemon Emerald and the Pokemon Emerald Expansion by modding the decomp. This system adds significant individual variation to Pokemon appearance (approximately 70 potential visual variants per Pokemon) and makes the components of their unique looks heritable by their offspring. While the coding for the project is pretty much done (apart from updating to the current version of the Expansion), I still have not finished all the sprite work. Nonetheless, I think this would be an ideal component for this sort of game, as it makes each Pokemon feel more unique. Because I've already done this ground work, I'm listing this as a ROM hack, though I could be convinced to port what I've done over to one of the RPG Maker platforms to avoid the limitations of emulated GBA hardware. At this early stage of development, switching platforms really shouldn't be too difficult.

Game Type: Pokemon Emerald Expansion Decomp

    Planned Features:
    • Following Pokemon
Individualized Pokemon appearances for Pokemon up to Gen III controlled by a new genetics system

    • System for matching Pokemon to new NPC owners
    • Additional ways to interact with and befriend Pokemon

    Planned Story:
You will play as an assistant to Professor Aspen, the owner of a Pokemon shelter. The shelter is equal parts animal rescue, education center, and pet shop.
