Default teams for each Playable Character

Ever since I've faced Red on Pokémon Silver, I've always speculated what would be Gold's team if he were to appear on a future game. In a way, I'm glad he didn't since it helped Red, the first PC of the series, achieve a legendary status (and deservedly so).

On Pokémon Gold/Silver, Red had the following team: Venusaur, Charizard, Blastoise, Pikachu, Espeon and Snorlax.

On the remakes HeartGold/SoulSilver, it was changed to: Venusaur, Charizard, Blastoise, Pikachu, Lapras and Snorlax.

Now, Venusaur, Charizard and Blastoise are the three starters of Red's generation. Pikachu was the starter of the Special Edition (more on this later). Espeon (Eevee with high friendship), Lapras and Snorlax are all event-Pokémon of his storyline.

There are many valid explanations for why Espeon was replaced by Lapras:

  • As was said, Lapras is an event-Pokémon on his storyline, received at Silph Co.;
  • Espeon was only revealed on Generation 2;
  • By having an Espeon, it's picking a preference over Eevee's various possible evolution lines;

Based on this, one could assume certain rules to base around when speculating about possible teams:

  • All Pokémon need to belong to its respective generation;
  • All Pokémon need to be fully evolved, when applicable;
  • It needs to have all three starters;
  • Other than the starters, all Pokémon need to be encountered/received on in-game events;
  • Of the Pokémon that are part of in-game events, they can't depend on the Player's choice (e.g: Hitmonlee/Hitmonchan, Omanyte/Kabuto, etc) in order to not show preference;
  • No legendaries;

So, if I were to pick Gold's team based on these rules, it would be:

Meganium, Typhlosion and Feraligatr (the starters), Togetic (received as an egg by Elm), Sudowoodo (found on Route 36), Shuckle (received on Cianwood City, stays with Gold if it has high friendship, which one could assume so like Red's Espeon).

Anyway, what are your thoughts? Do you agree? Disagree?

Other than Generation I and II games and their remakes, I'm not familiar with the other games and respective characters, so let me know what their teams could be.

P.S: Personally, I don't consider Pokémon Yellow a proper "Special Edition" (like Crystal, Emerald, etc), but a mere anime tie-in, which is what it was created for.

If I was able to replace Pikachu on Red's team, I would probably pick Aerodactyl, since it's the only remaining event-Pokémon available that fits.

Interesting thread, haha. Anyhow, for Brendan, I'd say team would consist of Swampert, Sceptile, Blaziken, Salamence, Mightyena, and possibly Milotic. For May, it would be most likely the same, but instead of Salamence and Mightyena, she would be having Flygon and Absol, respectively. d: She would also own Beautifly due to the anime, but I don't see her using this Pokémon on her actual team; she needs it for contests only.

I agree with Peitharchia's suggestions for Brendan's and May's team, although I'd probably squeeze Metagross somewhere in there. For Lucas, I guess he can have Torterra, Empoleon, Infernape, Togekiss, Glaceon and Porygon-Z. I could have placed Lucario, but both his types are already in his team and yeah. xD

Gold is pretty much spot on. But I disagree with the choice of Shuckle, and would have rather gone with the Shiny Gyarados (breaking a rule!) or even Umbreon (to parallel the fact that Red has an Espeon and Eevee is an in-game event Pokemon). Shuckle isn't even Gold's Pokemon if I recall correctly, since it's owner was someone elses, which makes me feel it doesn't deserve to be on Gold's team. But my preferred version for Gold's team is...

For D/P/Pt, I have a general idea what the team may be for Lucas/Dawn.

All of these Pokemon fit the criteria. We have all of the starters, and we have Pokemon that are all given as in-game event Pokemon. The option of having either Leafeon or Glaceon also exists as Eevee is once again given as an in-event Pokemon, but that requires the player's discretion. If you really wanted to include one of the Eeveelution, I believe Leafeon is the best choice as Cynthia has a Glaceon in B2W2, and having Leafeon would serve as a parallel to her Eeveelution.

  • No legendaries;
Unfortunately, I'm going to be breaking this rule as well. For Black/White, you're required to catch either Reshiram or Zekrom, so I feel they must be on the team despite being a legendary. So, for Hilbert/Hilda's team...

We have all the starters and three in-game event Pokemon (Musharna is available to catch in the Dreamyard after the E4). I choose Reshiram, as it represents the "truth" while Zekrom represents "ideals". It makes much more sense for the protagonist to be the hero of truth, and N being the hero of ideals. The last slot was a hard one for me though. As for Pokemon left, we have the elemental monkeys, fossil Pokemon, Zorua/Zoroark, and Volcarona. The monkeys don't really work as we have all the starters, the fossil Pokemon requires player's choice, both Zorua/Zoroark are actual "event" Pokemon, and that means we're left with Volcarona who is recieved from an egg.

Regarding Generation III, and avoiding picking a gender since apparently the opposite gender has a part (and team) in the game, here's what I assume could be the team for the Player in R/S/E:

In fact, there is little choice given since the other events are either legendaries or Pokémon from past generations.

Shuckle becomes Gold's Pokémon if it gets high friendship, which one could assume it does. And Red no longer has Espeon on his team (per the latest revisions), therefore having an Umbreon would imply preference (Red having an Espeon also does this, which is one of the reasons for why they changed it).

For D/P/Pt, I have a general idea what the team may be for Lucas/Dawn.

After a bit of research, I would just replace Togekiss and Porygon-Z (both from events exclusive to Platinum) by Drifblim and Rotom (from events present on all 3 games).

I would replace the legendary (since it varies with each version) for Darmanitan, which apparently you can get from an event on Desert Resort.

Ah, does it? Never knew that. Well, I just think Gyarados would be a better fit, because Gyarados is integrated into the main story somewhat (also have a personal bias for Gyarados bleh). I only gave the suggestion for Umbreon only to mirror Red's Espeon. And, I don't think that was one of the main reasons why Espeon was replaced. I'd more attribute to the fact that since Mt. Silver has infinite hail, they gave Red, a Lapras, just to have another Pokemon to abuse 100% accuracy Blizzard.
After a bit of research, I would just replace Togekiss and Porygon-Z (both from events exclusive to Platinum) by Drifblim and Rotom (from events present on all 3 games).
Well, Platinum is the confirmed version of being canon, so both Diamond and Pearl don't really have any bearing. So, having Togekiss and Porygon-Z isn't totally out of the realm of possibilities.

I would replace the legendary (since it varies with each version) for Darmanitan, which apparently you can get from an event on Desert Resort.
Ah, completely forgot about Darmanitan. Well, since Pokemon comes in two different versions, you could say that maybe in one version Hilbert will have Reshiram, and in the other he'll have Zekrom. But, I guess having Darmanitan would be the easier choice. Still irks me that Hilbert would have three fire types on his team.
