While cosmonauts are the ones stereotypically wearing orange suits, most space suits employed internationally are orange nowadays. Makes 'em easier to spot.

Really, the only suits that aren't orange are the ones used during extra-vehicular activity, like taking spacewalks. They're the iconic white ones we think of when someone says "astronaut"; coloured that way, of course, in order to reflect as much radiation as possible.



So Don, to answer your question: Yeah, maybe.

As I said, they're really easy to spot. :P

Shuttles often land in the ocean when returning to Earth, so it's pretty important to be able to find the astronauts quickly in big bodies of water. Same goes for if there's been an accident and you're trying to find survivors.

Basically, it's the same reason life jackets are orange.
