Well...the games aren't really dependent on each other, so you can start with whichever ones you want without feeling lost. You will see characters from other games with cameo appearances, though.
But yeah, if you're gonna try RF3 (or RF4, which is also fantastic), make sure you don't want to play RF1 or RF2 again. After RF3, it's really difficult to go back to them.
