Spooky.

Expectations based on the director's previous works are certainly a part of why I was so disappointment with the rebuilds. No impact. Wishy-washy, halfhearted direction. Even by anime standards the characters were flat.

I just don't expect intelligent or sensible things from Anno.

So far I haven't been disappointed.

Basing your opinion on which shows?

NGE seemed to me like it was just written as they went along; aside from the acceptance/depression thing which of course was inspired by what he was going through himself, I don't get the impression that much actual thought went into the characters or the story at all.

That said, it was quite a while since I watched it, I'm a bit coloured by joke images of Anno commenting on biblical references or getting stumped when asked what Rei likes, and I don't think I've watched anything else from that man.

But the world looks much more beautiful if you walk in expecting nothing from it, so there's that in my defence.

It certainly didn't stray away from the standard storytelling methods for the genre. Monster of the week and character backstory reveals up until the final large event. Didn't feel as if they were making it up as they went along for me, but I suppose that episodic formula can give off that impression.

Characters, I can't agree with you here. I thought they were all pretty great, memorable and right for the setting. Not quite as deep and the eva-fedoras would lead you to believe but as I have said, right. It certainly wasn't shounen hero, his waifu #1 the violent tsundere and his waufu #2 the sppoky kuudere like in the rebuilds.

Direction is far more than that though. As an artfag I thought you would have been more impressed with that aspect of Eva. Personally thought some of the visuals were astonishing. The OST was also perfect too, badly pronounced Fly Me To The Moon aside.

When watching NGE I can feel that Anno actually wanted to be there making it, I can see him as an 8 year old enjoyinh watching mecha anime on tv. The rebuilds, none of that. They still look okay in places but it just isn't Eva.

Man, recalling this has made me want to go and watch Nadia.

I enjoy both because I don't really criticize everything about a series like some people do

It's why I still love pokemon and golden sun
There's a big difference between being cynical and having an opinion.

For instance, if I'm going to stay on topic, with the whole series vs. film thing, I'll use a series I love as an example: Gurren Lagann. I outright like the movies more than the show. Though the movie cuts out a small bit in the form of a montage that is relatively supplemental to the shows themes, I think, overall, the movies are a huge step up from the show. The pacing is better, the characters still feel like the characters- nothing is lost in the translation and I'd say some of the characters have even more personality than they did in the show. The movies also stands to be a paragon of sound design, knowing exactly how to use and shift audio to complement what is on screen while hitting the viewer as hard as possible. Not to mention that the added scenes in both movies (the ending themes, especially) are just plain fantastic. They were what got me into TTGL after an incredibly mediocre run in with the show, not having impacted me even by the end. The movies are just plain better.

And it has issues, sure. A certain montage might leave some first time watchers confused, it can be slightly vague how the first and second movies connect, and in the first movie you're given a lot less time with the characters, which can be a bite in the ass around a certain point where you're supposed to feel something for a specific character (possibly).

But just ignoring those issues isn't the right way to go about it. Heck, there are certainly more than that, but I still love the movies. Really, it's accepting the flaws of something you like that will enable you to truly appreciate it for what it is.

No.

Oh boy, another Nurutu film just got confirmed. So since the manga ended we have will have had 2 films and another manga series. It seems Japan doesn't understand the concept of the word 'ending'.

Also a Japanese guy that went to to see it confirmed a bunch of stuff on 4chin, and it seems I get my cheesy G Gundam wish. Although I suppose that did write itself.
