Okay... excluding a few pokemon, why do pokemon just mumble their names over and over? Lol I was thinking about that and it really bugs me. Like 'Pika pik chuuuuuuu!'. I mean im accustomed to it now; but if I would have had the critical thinking skills I do now, back at age 9, I would be like what the hell? And how come they dont say their nicknames if you give them one?

What do you guys think lol?

I think that it's like a dog or cat, they have their one sound of way to speak even when we name them, they either bark, meow, or moo if it was a cow. I think the same goes with Pokémon each are their own species and they say their species name/sound rather than what a trainer might nickname them.

I guess it's just the creator's interpretation of a literal onomatopoeia. In real life, a Pokémon would be like an animal, unable to speak and, most likely, with no special powers. But, because this is an anime, the creators allowed the Pokémon to talk.

And how come they dont say their nicknames if you give them one?
I suppose it's because that's not their official species name.

What I'm REALLY curious about is how the Pokémon are named. Obviously, things like "Bulbasaur" would be easy to figure out, but things like "Charizard" would be much, much harder since they can't actually say their names; so how do they get named correctly? Charizard answers to Charizard or their nickname. But dogs don't even look when you say 'dog'. XD

    As for this:

No, they do not. Unless a Charizard starts saying "Char? Charizard?" I'm probably not going to think they sound brain damaged.

Well dogs don't go "Dog, Dog Do Dog" in real life. This is something that's always bugged me about pokemon, why don't they just have cries like in the games?

there are some pokemon like Lucario that doesnt say its name. But pokemon saying their species name isnt annoying to me

It would be weird hearing some of those that don't say their name, like Charizard, actually say their name. It doesn't give me brain damage though, it is basically something that reflects off of reality [one of those few connections between reality and Pokémon xD]

    Especially the Legendaries

I think it was the anime producers who suddenly realised their main Pokémon character is a rodent/rabbit, whom traditionally in our world doesn't make many noises (don't believe the movies when they have rats running around squeaking, they are silent on most parts unless they're fighting or hurt).

I think they needed to convey communication between Ash and Pikachu and make it an appealing sound; pikachu squeaking like a rat may make some kids not like him since more people don't like rats and also a high pitched sound like that could become annoying. Rabbits don't make noises unless you include grunted when annoyed. What else could the electric rodent sound like?

The obvious choice was to make it say a soft sound, like its name. Also just saying 'pee pee' without adding the rest every so often would be silly.

Try muting the program when pikachu 'talks' and substitute your own sound to see if that changes the lovability of him.

I do personally find it annoying too and feels like a short cut for most pokemon, but at the end of the day it's made for little kids. :)

I think a select few pokemon should have growls and another select few call their names (but not so clear that you can tell). Like make Grotle sound like the Bob-ombs from Mario 64 while slightly calling it's name. Or give Alakazam a groaning or moaning sound, emphasizing it's aged appearance and psychic abilties.

Besides...thats all voice acting, so they play a role in making them sound decent or so.

They also make the voices sound the way they do probably just to distinguish them all. If they were just simply noices like the games, then a lot would sound quite similar, and it would be a bit complicated for fans to really understand who the Pokémon is. Actually, if they gave the anime Pokémon just moaning, groaning, or roaring sounds it would be a little bit edgy for some, at least that is what I think...

It's a better alternative to the in game cries. I think they just ge tone guy and strangle him to see what cry he makes. The record it and BAM! New Pokemon cry.

In the anime, It's a healthy alternative to the games. You don't want the anime to be too much like the games, do you?

It's true, actually in some Pokémon for the game, I don't know if I'm the only one who hears it, but some of the noises the in-game Pokémon make sound a bit like if they are saying their Species name.

For the anime, no, it would be a little strange if the Pokémon sounded like they do in the game, which is what I believe I said earlier...if not, then here it is.

Why dont you send Nintendo a letter or something? XD In all seriousness, I guess it's just their noise they make, as people have already said, like a cow saying moo etc. Why they mumble them, I dont know. But you have to remember, it's the anime (excluding Pikachu in Yellow :\) which have Pokemon saying their names, not the games, so I would say it's the anime's fault they sound...brain damaged? XD

In addition to that, you have to put into account that the Pokémon being voiced in the show are real people so they all have different sounds. As for the game, it is digitally created.

Well I concede- even brain damaged people dont go around saying 'Davi... Daviddd... DAVE!', unless of course we are including Timmy from south park:D.

This thread wasn't meant to spark controversy, or flame the anime; I suppose it does workout that they say their names. I just wanted to go off on a random tangent comparing things in anime to real life... Which never really works out:)

Haha ive effectivley convinced my girlfriend that IM brain damaged. We were out walking the other day, and we saw a really cool hawk. I was all 'that looks alot like a pidgeot... im starting to think real animals are based off of pokemon.' She was worried.. So no more deep pokemon driven introspection for me.

    Rofl. That was funny. xD

More on topic, I think it's fine with most Pokemon saying their names. Especially Pikachu, forming so many answers with that one little word. However, Chimchar and Piplups' voices suck. I hate them.

Question: if this is about the anime compared to reality, shouldn't this have been placed in the Pokémon anime section? xD

Anyway, I see no brain damage in all of this...except if a person just starts shooting off like a Pokémon does xD The sounds though, I think they're fine in the show...

I thought the Pokemon were named after the sound they make.

Some could have been named after the sounds they made, but then there are those who are named, when they don't even use their name as their sound. xD

    Which Pokemon do that?

(Also, why do you make like 10 posts in every thread?)
