Do you find the language in Pokemon games up to date?

    I remember playing pokemon as a 3rd grader, oblivious as to what words like "Obtained", "Schintalling", and "Incedentally" meant. The words were nearly spammed in the second and third generations, and showed up a bit in the fourth. Then in the fourth generation, NoA attempted to modernize it a bit by having a trainer say something was "sick" and a youngster in HG/SS say that he looked "fresh", if I recall correctly. So, what is your opinion on the lingo used in Pokemon games, do you find it modern and undestandable, or somewhat awkward?
     
    Guess it depends on the age you play it. I know there were a lot of words I didn't understand when I was 11 playing Sapphire. And now when I play, I actually read through and I'm like "whoa, I've been saying that wrong for years." Nothing specific comes to mind though. Oh and lingo...yeeeeeah, sometimes I'm just like "wait, what? wasn't that cool in the 90's?" and...yeah, I just kinda brush it off and get on my way. It's amusing though.
     
    It is weird reading some of those big words but then again when I see a big word in a Garfield comic I have to look it up in the dictionary. At least you can get through the game if you don't understand every word.
     
    It depends. Remakes tend to feel a bit outdated, but DP was definitely up to date. They even had internet lingo in the game.

    I remember these phrases.


    • "Let me show you around so you don't look like a total noob."
    • "There's no way I'll lose to a noob like you!"
    • "Cosmic energy for the win!"
    • "My Pokemon is Fight!"


    I also distinctly remember a certain trainer saying that he got "owned". It's too bad that the guy responsible for the internet slang isn't translating anymore.
     
    I always liked "obtained" for some reason, mainly because it takes me back to the old games and it feels like you're on an adventure. "Got the Card Key" just wouldn't sound the same to me. :L
     
    I find it ridiculous. I mean, a 35+ something programmer trying to make the character up to date. So funny.

    I doubt the programmer is the one who decides what everyone says, they'll probably have someone else do that.

    To answer the OP, I don't have much of an opinion, really. I never noticed not understanding certain words, if I ever did.
     
    I remember when I got my red version and I was like 7 or 8 and the guy in pallette town said something about "technology" and I was like "wtf is that???" lmao i was so stupid.
     
    I've noticed these changes over the years and I can say I'm happy they gave the games a more modern feel. I first noticed this when a swimmer in Fire Red "Aww don't be hatin'" Then in HG/SS, almost everybody who calls you from the pokegear starts off by saying "sup" The games got really good with it in BW but I'll let everybody find that out on their own.

    Why isn't that guy translating anymore?! Nob Ogasawara, right? Great translator...I haven't even played Platinum yet and already I love all the memes and trendy phrases he managed to insert for the games. The translators should bring him back! Are the translators afraid of memetic phrases being instilled in Pokemon games or what?

    LOL...I remember Scientist Gideon in FireRed saying post-battle, IIRC: "Darn! Darn! Darn!"

    I hope BW has a nice translation...I heard HG/SS's translation got butchered a bit. Especially the old man in Celadon infamously having his dialogue changed from "I love this Gym! It's full of women!" to "I love this Gym! It's full of powerful Trainers!" :cer_cry: Anyone know if Juggler Irwin got his dialogue changed in Generation 4 as well?


    The dialogue is upping its vocabulary, though. Indefatigable, tenacious, enthralling, griseous, batonnage, immolated, stricken, and adamant are just some of the words that, surprisingly, Pokemon has managed to teach me. For part of a speech project, I even asked the audience whether they knew what indefatigable, tenacious, and/or griseous meant! (the purpose of the speech project was to demonstrate the benefits of videogames. Learning new vocabulary is apparently one of them! :D)

    If not now, the 'up-to-date' slang will be far from that within at least five years, making nostalgia trips potentially painful.

    I never had a problem with the 'big words', their meaning should be easy enough to infer from context, eg. "PokéBall obtained!" and having a PokéBall added to my inventory suggests that 'obtained' means "you found a X!".
