2nd Gen Does anybody else feel that Pokemon has declined in quality?

I wouldn't quite say they've declined in quality. EV training and the like are interesting ideas, but it's all so tedious now that it takes a lot of the fun out of the games, whereas the original ones never made you worry about whether you were battling a Rattata or a Butterfree as long as you did some practice before continuing your adventure.

And if you don't EV train in the newer gen, you'll get thrashed by the later battles and by your friends who play...

I know what you mean. diamond and pearl don't have the same feel as red and blue. they are still awesome. i just just bought an original blue version today. can't wait to play it again. Gonna go Retro on my lime green game boy color. :-)

I agree to be honest. I wouldnt say the Gen 3/4 games were crap or anything (ive not played my D/P that I bought yet, but I played on my mates though), but all people seem to be doing with those games are worrying about EVs, IVs, Natures, Abilities and all that, not to mention shinies. Im not saying that I would hate to have a shiny, but there not worth the effort I think.

R/B/Y and G/S/C had the best part, the collection. I play the games to beat the game, then 'catch 'em all' as they say, and the best stories were in the Gen 1/2 games.

Another thing, anyone noticed some of the new evolutions get stranger as they invent them? My most 'unfavorite' Pokémon now is Magnezone. I mean, I didnt particularly like or dislike Magnemite/ton earlier, but 'zone just looks purely mad. It ruined the evolution. Others, like Weavile look cool, and only make pre-evolutions stronger, but come on, to much of a good thing?

Nintendo need to keep making the games, yes, but the whole new EVERYTHING has gotta slow. The next game wouldnt be half bad if it travelled between all 4 regions, and you could catch all of them at some point, maybe some though in-game trades.

Just my theory, really. :)

I acutallty love the metagame of the fourth genartion , it is only bad this genration for the in-game players but that is why they invented shiny hunting in my opion

But i have to say the sotry did suck this gen compared to the oh so awesome 2gen

I totally agree. Pokemon has just lost it's feel after the 3rd gen. I was even thinking maybe it's because it's 3D. I don't really care for the 3D feel, I would rather have it like the traditional flat way.

I don't really care for the 4th gen starters, the only one that appeals to me is Chimchar.

Red and Crystal will always remain my favorite pokemon games.

For me, the third generation was the one that started to not feel right. Every time I looked at a third gen. poke, it didn't look right. My favorite game is Firered for that reason.

Some of the pokemon in DP look like pokemon, while others (Lickilicky, Nosepass evo, and some others) look like they popped out of a horror movie. ^_~

The newer games just don't feel like Pokemon anymore. RBY was the best, GSC was great, RSE was ok but didn't really feel the same and DP just doesn't feel like Pokemon anymore. RBY and GSC were some of the greatest games i've ever played. I can still remember my good old lvl 70 Blastoise from Red, and my Feraligatr from Gold. I remember how good it felt when I took that first step from Johto into Kanto back in Gold. Now, it just doesn't feel the same. Luckily my friend and me are playing Red and Blue all over again, so I can finally relive some of those great moments. =)

I agree, used to be the good old days,Chikorita versus falkner, everyone crowded around in anticipation...

Now it's like "OMFG I WANT ONE WITH IVS OVER 20!!!" I liked team aqua though :P just becuase im water bias...
I think 4th gen also swirled it downward...

I loved the feel of the 1st and 2nd gen, Im ok with hoenn, just becuase of the water though....

This just makes us all want a GSC remake even more..xD

I remember taking my GameBoy to school on game days in promary school, first playing Pokémon Red whihc everyone owned (or Blue) and everyone was interested in everyone elses game, then pretty much the same with Gold and Silver a few years on. Now, unless you IVs are above 25, the EV values are maxed out in the best stat and the nature and ability are ones that compliment the Pokémon, then noone is interested in trading or even watching you play the game. Sometimes, you can have too much detail in things, and unless Pokémon slow down on the advances, it may end up being ruined.

At least people you know actually like Pokemon. I only have one friend that plays Pokemon still.

Im at college, and theres a few people (like prob 3?) who still play it, but only the newer versions, but most of them think the older games were better. Some of my friends think like "WTF?" cuz im like 17, but i dont care, its a game none the less like any PS3 or X360 game anyway, just on a smaller version.

Before I get into anything, I must admit that I cannot fairly judge D/P since I do not own a DS and have never played a game past the 3rd gen. However, I don't want to play the new games. I may, some day, but I've checked out the Poke'dex online, and I am far from impressed. Some of the new evolutions don't seem right to me, personally. Magmar's new evo looks scary, and Sneasel lost all of its awesome when they came up with Weavile. And what's with the new Regi? Regigigas seems like a desperate attempt to think of something new. The first Regis were actually really cool! They kept the concept of a trio of legends but they mixed things up a bit from the usual water, fire, electric type thing they had going. Which was still great, it was just nice to have a little bit of a change, just once. But Regigigas... it's jsut wrong. And the sprites are wicked weird, I don't think they're trying with the games anymore. With the old programing it was difficult to creat cool images with it, so they HAD to try (I don't know about R/B/G sprites lol, but it was evident in G/S/C). Now they can throw out some half-baked images that look fine, but I don't like them. To be honest, I think the new sprites are ... well, there's just no other way to put it: UGLY. Not ugly like some of the R/B/G poke'mon game sprites ugly, but a-lack-of-character-and-nothing-like-the-original-designs ugly. (if that made any sense.) Jynx's eyes got unnaturally small, Pikachu lost it's adorable chubbiness, and Charizard seems disproportional, to name a few.

I completely agree with the whole rival team issue. The Team Rocket in the games were bad to the bone and I actually wanted to thrash them. They really were evil with evil intentions. (I'm going to side track for a moment.) Even in the show with Jessie and James specifically, they were easy to beat and a bit of a joke, BUT I could take them seriously that they wanted to be bad and wanted to please Giovanni. Now, they speak in almost all rhymes and aren't much like the Jessie and James I remember (end side track.) But then came along Team Magma and Team Aqua. They weren't "bad guys" at all; they just wanted to do what they thought was right. There was no real enemy in the 3rd generation games, no one that was really evil. And it seemed that Aqua and Magma weren't right in the head. I mean, for the cause they had, they must have had a LOT of time on their hands! Bringing legends awake just to expande the sea or the land. Team Rocket was much more believeable: if Poke'mon were real, of course there would be that handful that would only use them for exploitation and profits. That would totally happen! Not everyone in the world is a nice person. But I doubt that there would be that many people determined to disrupt the balance of nature. Team Rocket was simply that much more realistic in my mind.

About the show...
I've seen several of the new episodes and it seems like Poke'mon isn't trying to just be Poke'mon anymore - it's trying to be cool to captivate the younger audience, a generation that didn't grow up with it and are growing up under a different influence. Even straight from the beginning with the theme song that was obviously from the 90's. I know the original one word for word and it said everything that Poke'mon was about: the journey, the battles, the glory, and becoming a Team with your Poke'mon. A little bit corny, true enough, but not sappy or soap opera-ish. Now it's more like some of the music you hear on the radio. And it does talk about some important things like battling, but it seems to focus on the battle itself and being cool. When I listen to it, it doesn't make me think of Trainers chasing the dream. I see the old shows and think of the average little Trainer trying to be the best they can be and watching their Poke'mon grow. Somehow this one seems to have ana ttitude about it, like being the best simply because it's cool, and not because you've worked hard for it. (Does this sound crazy? Yeah, probably, but hey, that's how I am.) I understand what they're trying to do, and it's working: my 10-year-old little brother loves the new face on Poke'mon as opposed to "the old, lame Poke'mon," in his words.

Again, this is my personal opinion, and I don't dare to claim it's right or the only one. But I feel pretty strong about it. The original was classic, and the second gerneration was pretty awesome too. And while the newer games have better graphics, it's lost all the charm and imagination that pulled me in from an early age. I still love Poke'mon and yeah, the 3rd gen. games are okay. I bet D/P is alright too. And I also admit that I'm the kind of person who goes for the whole dream-chasing thing and nostalgia anyway. But Poke'mon is definately NOT the same, and I feel that it has declined in quality alright.

By the way: it sounds like natures and such are kind of obnoxious O_o I mean, I guess it helps to characterize the Poke'mon so they seem more like they have their own personalities, but I bet it gets annoying sometimes. Doesn't it?

EDIT: OMG! I'm sorry that's a really long post! D: Wow, thanks so much for anyone that has the time to read that ^^; I got really carried away... oops....

Dude I've been hoping for a G/S/C remake for the longest time; I totally agree XD They redid the originals, why not the 2nd. gen.?

I liked the G/S/C games the best, for their time they were amazing. R/S/E had a good story, but the pokemon were all so crappy I didn't even want to raise them. The first generation games were good too, but I've been playing Diamond, then went back to start a game on red, and I couldn't do it, getting around takes forever. In D/P I think they only put a half effort into the actual game, in favor of making a bunch of new, strong pokemon for the metagame. Now all I do is breed, I took a full 22 hours to beat the E4 and now I've spent almost all the rest of my 200 or so riding my bike through Solaceon town. It has driven me back to playing my Crystal and Leaf Green.

They really need to remake Gold and Silver for Advance or DS

XD That about sums up my thoughts, too. Yellow and Gold are probably my two favorite games out of them all. I don't particularly like most of the new pokemon... The only thing I think has really improved is the graphics.

Of course, what I'd really like would be a game where you could actually "catch them all" without having to buy any other game, but I know that'll never happen, so....

I think they should have a new sort of "yellow" where the starter pokemon follows you around and you can see how it's feeling. That was pretty sweet.

And, yeah. Though Solar Ninjas sounds pretty cool... Hey. Maybe they can bring in Giovanni's son or something who's carrying on the family evil. Rocket Ressurected or something. Or, here's a brainwave. They should do a Dark generation where you're part of Team Rocket trying to take over the world.

Wow guys!

I thought I was the only one who thought this! I love you all!

Yep, I agree with all of you that Pokémon declined starting with Gen. 3. After that, I stopped caring for the whole thing and just stopped. Well, I'm here now because I'm severely nostalgic to the whole Pokémon gig. That's the old Gameboy/Color games! The metals and colors!

I used to pan the Gen. 2 Pokémon for quite some time in 2001. Then, they grew on me. They felt a bit more "natural" than the designs from the 3rd and 4th generations. So, right now, I really don't know any of the names of the 3rd or 4th Generation Pokémon. I only know GOURDON, DEOXYS (I make fun of him while ROM hacking* ;P) or CHIMCHAR I guess. Not a fan of those...

but I am indeed a fan of better gameplay and graphics on the games! I wish there was a remake for Gold/Silver. That would be wooooonderfuuuul...

*I make fun of DEOXYS by planting him all over Hoenn as a common Pokémon. With terrible stats. It's what the design deserves ;) (sorry guys, not a big 3-4 gen fan)

I agree, Pokemon games aren't as good as they used to be and what really bothers me the most is that Nintendo doesn't put enough information in the game already to let you know about EV training, IVs, Natures, Characteristics, Egg Moves and a bunch of other stuff so it basically makes buying a Strategy Guide essential if you want to actually raise GOOD Pokemon.

What's up with that and there's some other information that ISN'T EVEN IN THE STRATEGY GUIDE, like advice on using Ditto to get the correct Nature, how to built Pokemon for specific jobs (sweeper, tank, etc.) and the most annoying, HOW TO CUSTOMIZE THE TYPE OF HIDDEN POWER!!! PLUS, THERE'S A LOT OF TYPOS IN THE GUIDE I HAVE!!!

I think it's just laziness and that they think most of the kids who get the game aren't going to understand things like that, even though that's what makes the game so complex for more RPG fans. Pretty much everything else has already been said, the story is too old now, the rival teams are garbage (why not bring back Team Rocket, Jesse, James, and Meowth!?) and the Gym Leaders are not memorable anymore AT ALL. THEY ARE COMPLETELY BORING!

If parents didn't have to worry about hackers or people with dirty mouths, it'd be awesome to have a 3D MMORPG type of thing with Pokémon - but then again, that brings in the whole competitive who-has-the-best-stats aspect and turns into any other MMORPG out there.

What was the game called for GameCube I think that was kinda like an RPG of Pokémon? I need to buy that game! =P

...(why not bring back Team Rocket, Jesse, James, and Meowth!?) and the Gym Leaders are not memorable anymore AT ALL. THEY ARE COMPLETELY BORING!

You are soooo correct!!!!

I remember when I could name all the Gym Leaders and knew what kind of Pokémon they trained along with their personalities. I honestly can't tell you one of the new Gym Leaders names in Diamond/Pearl and I just beat one yesterday!

[Sorry for double post!]
