i've spents hours and hours trying to captures pokes with the right nature AND decent iv's. example, i caught like fifty heracross and every single one of them had shoddy iv's. sometimes a 31 attack, then single digits in everything else. then i decided to try to breed one. 5 eggs in, i get an adamant one wit 31 atk and 20+ in most other stats. so then i decide to breed a skarmory wit roost. 15 eggs in, same thing! 31 atk and 20+ in other stats. hardy nature tho. good nuff for me. point is... have i been wasting my time and pokeballs trying to captures beastly pokemon, when i shud be breeding? and for future reference, is this the case with pokemon x and y as well?

Yeah, breeding is usually the way to go if you want pokes with good IVs and the right nature. The chances of a wild poke of having 4, 5, or 6 perfect IVs is very, very low.

^ Except with certain Pokémon, like stuff that can't breed (baby Pokémon and legendaries), which always have at least 3 perfect IVs on them. And there's the stuff in the Friend Safari which always have at least 2. I once found a 4 perfect IV Riolu with a 30 thrown in in a Friend Safari.

that makes sense. i wish i knew this last month. i beat black 1 and 2 last and spent hours and hours searching for adamant damanitan and scrafty wit moxie. like i kid u not, 6+ hours for just that scrafty, almost gave up a few times lol, but the fact that i already spent a couple hours on it was the only reason i refused to give!!?! then after i beat the game and try breeding a sigiliph wit roost, i found out the everstone trick, power items, etc.

Breeding pokemon makes it easier to get better stats, but things you should know (I'm only going to cover stats so I can keep this short):

-Stats are generated when you receive the egg...

-3 stats are always passed down from each parent...I believe gender decides this...

-The other 3 stats are always randomly generated, unless a special condition occurs...

-Depending on the game, starting with late Gen. IV, you can use items to choose one stat to pass down from each parent...The items are the Power Bracer (HP), Power Anklet (Speed), Power Band (Attack), Power........all of the items have Power in the name and can be purchased post-game from the Battle Frontier...

-Starting in X and Y: Destiny Knot ensures that 5 IVs are passed down...The inherited IVs are chosen randomly, and the same stat can be chosen from each parent...

Anything I missed?...remember, I said I'm only talking about stats...

In my opinion, breeding is much better.
The bad part is, it's still chance, just like catching pokemon. On top of this, it can take days to get the right pokemon.
However, there are some good things to it.
There's much, much more control. You can control the ability, which IVs they'll have, which moves they have, and so on. I would suggest just breeding pokemon, as there are more upsides to it then just trying your luck at catching a pokemon.

Breeding is really the best way to go for optimal IV's and nature. Wild Mons tend to have inferior IV's unless, in X/Y it's a baby or legendary. They're guranteed to have three perfect IV's

Breeding is the best way to get Pokemon with the right nature and right IVs, especially if you learn the basics of IV breeding.

We have a nice breeding guide for Gen 5 and 6 in Trade Corner: https://www.pokecommunity.com/threads/308720

    Hope that helps~
