I've always considered ''slice of life'' shows to be somewhat, you know, a slice of life. Life tends not to have ghosts, magic, giant monsters that just happen to be manifestations of the anger of a high school girl, a high school that is God none the less.
There are other shows which are grounded in a lot more reality that I also wouldn't call slice of life. Things like Nodame Cantabile, Hanasaku Iroha and Toradora, I would simply call those drama, romance or whatever.
