Sun Wukong is the name of the monkey deity in which the character of Goku was originally based on. His Japanese name Son Gokuu, which is how the name Sun Wukong is said in Japanese.

Indeed he is. The beginning of the original Dragon Ball series was (very) loosely based on Saiyuki, or Journey to the West
