Adding to the Gym Leader and Elite Four Rosters, I think GSC really lacked good early game Pokemon. Before Violet City, you only had your starter to rely on and a bunch of mediocre or bad Pokemon like Sentret, Ledyba, Spinarak, and Hoothoot. Although you could have gone through most of the game with them and their evolutions, I am hoping this is not the case for HG/SS with the possibility of a more difficult game.

The only "decent" and easily catchable Pokemon in Gold and Silver before Goldenrod city are Mareep, Wooper, Hoppip, and Poliwag (to Politoed). Hopefully, HG/SS adds more useful Pokemon such as Phanpy (added in Crystal), Teddiursa, or Aipom earlier in the game. :]]]

**Note that I did not mention any first generation Pokemon since I want HG/SS to focus mostly on the second generation. (Not that there were many good 1st gen Pokemon available either! ^__^;; ).

Aren't there really only crappy pokemon every game?

    Caterpie, Weedle, Pidgey, Ratata.
    Wurmple, Zigzagoon.
    Bidoof, Starly.

    All crap XD
I'd love for there to be better pokemon, especially since I'm sure the Gyms will get a level boost.

I agree, i want poliwag to be on the route it was in on Crystal, so you could have it for the 1st Gym :D it really helped me againt falkner when i chose Chikorita, cos otherwise i had nothing & on G/S you literally had pidgey, hoothoot or sentret to help you, and they aren't exactly fantastic :|

No not really! All games had pretty useful Pokemon before the 3rd gym and Pokemon that actually helped against the gym leaders.

RBY: Mankey (vs. Brock if you chose Charmander), Butterfree (vs. Brock), Pikachu, Abra, Magikarp -> Gyarados, Oddish/Bellsprout (vs. Misty), Diglett, Growlithe/Vulpix, etc.

RSE: Taillow, Shroomish, Electrike, Abra, Aron, Makuhita, Lotad, etc.

Yes, I want some decent pokemon. For example, a Growlite before the wnd gym, because I'm forced to choose a fire starter -.- You can catch a slowpoke in slowpoke well, which evolving into slowking is a fairly good pokemon. And zubats also, I don't get why people forget them. They're good when evolved into Crobat. What else.. some good grass pokemon please!

One of the many things I liked about Johto was how many nooks and crannies and unnecessary places there were to go hang out and catch different, unique Pokémon.

The Dark Cave is a good example. Most certainly, our friend, Dunsparce, is going to be found in there, probably only rarely, save for swarms, but they could totally throw in a couple of other interesting Pokémon like Gligar, Sandshrew, or Abra.

Growlithe could also be introduced earlier, like beside Azalea Town where you find Hoppip.

If a Pokémon is available who learns Headbutt at a low level, and assuming that Headbutt Trees are returning, filling the same niche as Honey Trees, then that would give you access to early encounters with Aipom, Pineco, and Heracross.

If there *are* Honey Trees, then Teddiursa *NEEDS* to be found this way, version-exclusive or not! :D

I agree. I, too, would like to see better Pokemon early on in the games, but it has been pretty characteristic of the games so far to have weak ones. As much as I would like to see some R/S/E and D/P/Pt wild Pokemon early on in HG/SS, I don't think it will be a reality. If we are judging from the last remakes we may not see too much of a difference in locations in HG/SS. FR/LG kept the same Pokemon locations for the most part until after the E4 and you reached the Sevii Islands and Cerulean Cave.

But, who knows? I hope the programmers will surprise us with some decent Pokemon at the beginning of the game.

I would certainly agree that an Aipom would be a fantastic addition to any team. Maybe some other types of pokemon, because the only type other than normal or flying was a mareep (after the first gym) and gastly in sprout tower. Which tbh, doesn't really add to any other types such as fire, water or grass (i'm mainly talking about the main 3 types).

Were Spinarak/Ledyba around just to make use of the day/night system? Or did they fill the Bug-type niche because Caterpie failed for some reason...? It's very forseeable that something different will pop up or even that Dunsparce is more common. Early in the game, Serene Grace wouldn't hurt.

Wow... have you forgotten? PIDGEY. Pidgey evolves into an amazing flying pokemon (during the plot of the game, not competitive battling) and is very useful up to around Olivine City. After that hes crap.

Plus didn't you notice that ALL the pokemon games have bad early pokemon? They usually have like 1 good bird pokemon and a good other guy, like Kanto had Pidgey and Mankey, this game has Pidgey and Geodude, Hoenn had Ralts and Tailow, Sinnoh had Starly and Abra. Gardevoir and Swellow are badass, Pidgeot and Primeape are badass, Golem Staraptor and Alakazam are badass as well.

They balanced it out so that no matter what starter you chose, it was always possible to have a type advantage over the 1st gym leader.

I remember starting off with Chikorita and getting owned by Falkner. I mean OWNED. I don't even think little Root even beat that first Pidgey. Then I went to the route to catch Mareep to get back at Falkner only for my little Heart to Break when I found out that you couldn't get until AFTER you beat Falkner.

What Pokemon I look for early on...when I have Chikorita, I make sure to get a Caterpie to evolve into Butterfree and I use Confusion on Falkner's Pokemon. Good Pokemon for early on: Spearow/Hoothoot, Mareep, Poliwag, Butterfree (Confusion), Goldeen (if I can't find Poliwag), (Btw, Hoothoot can learn Foresight. It allows you to attack Ghost types with Normal Moves.) I get a Drowsee and trade it with the person in Goldenrod's dept store for a Machop. I get it a few levels, and use Machop for Whitney. Right now, my party is Poliwhirl, Ampharos, Quilava, Eevee(Knows Shadow Ball), Sudowoodo (Good for versing Pryce. Rock is good against Ice), Looking for a new Flying type. I usually change up my roster until I can find a good team. (Last time, I had a really powerful Miltank. Stomp creamed the Elite Four.) I don't mind the early game Pokemon. I just catch them, use them for a while and replace them when I find a better Pokemon. I like it that way instead of only battling with 6 set Pokemon.

    This. MTE. Word. Thank you.

It doesn't bother me that there are "not good" Pokemon to catch in the early portions of the games. (Most of those common early Pokemon are also some of my favorite Pokemon, so that also doesn't hurt.) I like raising up those Pokemon and coming up with different move sets to make them usable against the Gyms that my starter have a problem with. It's fun. It's challenging. It's something that I hope they keep in the game because of these reasons.

Personally, for me, having a lot of Pokemon that make it easy against all the Gyms would ruin the fun for me.

I dont mind the early game pokemon i never really trained any pokemon but my starter and I only caught pokemon for the hm moves

I ****ing love caterpies. I trained them in every game I got, regardless if they suck.

Well, as that was the only gen i played, i remember continuous fail against Whitney, so maybe a Machop on the route towards Goldenrod. And maybe low level Noctowl before Bugsy. I always start with Totadile, and it gets annoying trying to trying Hoothoot. xD. But I remember failing so hard to Whitney and her Uber Miltank. XD It got so frustrating.

You just defined the word 'challenge'. Congratulations.

Now to actually stop whining, you should start being a little bit more creative in the early Pokemon's skill setup. Try a Hypnosis Hoothoot or a ToxiStall Spinarak. Works wonders espeically for the earlier gyms. Of course you would need to switch both Pokemon out for much better ones later in the game (Scizor for example).

Since it's a remake, we'll most likely be seeing the same Pokémon from the original G/S/C.
