Setting
The year is 20XX. Team Rocket have finally taken over Kanto through subterfuge and economic influence, and are spreading their operations farther and farther out through Johto and other neighbouring regions. However, the Rockets' less than stealthy methods since have all but revealed to the people the true identity of their leaders, and the region of Kanto is on the verge of revolting. To deal with the growing problem, Team Rocket has decided to take drastic measures.
Under the guise of a "study trip", a group of students from Whitewater High School in the town of Whitewater are sleep-gassed on a bus. Twenty-one in all, they awaken to find themselves in a school complex on Emberstripe Island, an isolated, evacuated island far south of Cinnabar in the ocean off Kanto's shore. The children are greeted by an armed contingent of Rockets and a Rocket Executive, who explains the situation. The children learn that they have been placed in an event called "The Program". Officially a military research project, The Program is a means of terrorizing the population, of creating such paranoia as to make organized insurgency impossible. Students whose parents are suspected of rebellious acts or dissent are grouped together and isolated, and each "class" is required to fight to the death until one student remains. Their movements are restricted by metal collars around their necks which contain tracking and listening devices; if any student should attempt to escape The Program, or enter declared "danger zones", a bomb will be detonated in the collar, killing the wearer. If no student dies in any 24 hour period, all collars will be detonated simultaneously. The students are issued survival packs which include a map, compass, flashlight, food and water, and a random pokémon, before being sent out on the island to kill one another.
The plan is simple; back home on Kanto, the rumours spread of the Rockets' new style of punishment, and parents all over the region grow ever more worried for their young until, finally, the survivor returns and confirms their fears. Not only does this instil fear in the hearts of Team Rocket's enemies, but could also create tensions between traitors - how exactly does the relationship work out between you and the father of your son's killer?
The twenty-one children are let out from the school complex, one by one, sent out into the jungle to kill each other. Will they?
Other Information
Right, let's blow through the simple stuff quickly:
No legendaries, no shinies, no levels, no natures, no bunnying or any of that stuff - I'm sure you get the picture. Your pokémon are not restricted to four moves, and I will be the one who decides when they learn new ones.
There are twenty-one students, but I'll accept a maximum of six people - the rest are common NPCs for you to kill or be killed by, depending on yourself. You start out with one of the 21 random starter pokémon, so include in your application which one (1-21) you would like. You don't get any pokéballs, and you do not get a pokédex. Your pokémon will also have a personality description, which will determine how it acts against you and others.
I've found the chapter-style role plays around here to be somewhat suspenseless for my taste and therefore this role play will not be run chapter-style - in fact, this will be my testing grounds for something a wee bit different. You control your trainer at all times, but you do not control your pokémon. It will work like this: while out of battle, you run around like usual, searching through the island for people to kill and stuff to snag. Your actions, luck and writing will determine how the world responds - there will be a map of the island available before the role play starts, so you will be able to know largely what the environment looks like while you post, in which direction you'll want to go and so on. Every once in a while (before the same player gets to post twice, at the very least) I will pop in and type up a response to each player's situation, what sort of things he encounters, and how exactly the area he stops in looks. At least once every in-game day, there will also be an announcement from the Rockets about who has died and which areas are about to become danger zones. When battle ensues, you describe your intended strategy and I play it out between your pokémon and the opponent depending on strategy, personality, type and so on.
And remember, your characters are regular high school students who didn't waste years going on pokémon journeys, so it's likely that most of them aren't walking pokédexes. Unlike in your chapter games the player won't be the one deciding next to everything, and I hope that this game will have the unknown going for it.
