I recently purchased a Pokemon emerald cartridge for gba and I made a game in the first save slot. I began a second game in the other save slot, but when I went to save it for the first time, it warned me of deleting another save file. Can I really only have one save file? And if so, why are there two save game slots?

Are you sure there's an option for two save files? Popping in my own Emerald cartridge, I only see the Continue, New Game, and Option choices. Where did you get your Emerald cartridge?

All main series Pokemon games only allow you to have just one save file. It's just a decision the designers made. No matter how much you might wish differently, you can only have one save file.

I'm assuming it was just a confusion over the New Game and Continue options, rather than there explicitly being multiple save slots when you first got the game. Like Astinus said, since the beginning of the series, all of the Pokemon games have only allowed for one save, which means you would've only had 3 options on the menu when you first played it (assuming it was an unused cartridge). If there was anything other than that one a supposedly new cartridge, then you might be looking at a fake copy (though I'll assume it just happens to be the former case instead of the latter).
